Overview
Smart is smart. But when you're the oldest of six, your father is dead, and your mother is dying of cancer, college, real college, takes a back seat to doing the right thing. Though she wanted to make her family and her neighborhood in Portland, Maine proud, Susan Cunningham shunned the scholarships and took a job at the local supermarket after she graduated from high school (valedictorian, of course) to care for her family. She also made some money on the side sewing dresses and doing tailoring. More than a few of her fellow students had boasted of her prom dress creations. In the meantime, she managed to take a few night school classes in biology, but it was just a wish for a brighter future.
Be careful of what you wish for. Someone might hear. One evening after classes, the walk through the covered parking lot went awry, and she found herself traveling through Hedges and into a deep, dark forest. It was the Tenebrous Weald, a dark arcane Arcadian woods full of ancient trees and ancient magic. Set upon by briarwolves, Susan ran until she came upon a small cottage. Banging on the door, she was met with a very old, very gnarled woman, who pulled her in to safety, then doomed Susan to become her servant. This woman was the Fae called Annis the Hag, and her victims, after years of brutal, punishing servitude, generally ended up as food or useful objects in her cottage. But Susan was clever enough to pay attention to the Hag as she went about her duties. And she slowly learned the ways of magic. She talked to the Hearth and the Stone. And soon, she became almost as gnarled and witchy as the Hag herself.
Susan doesn't quite remember much about her Durance, save for a few nightmares. She doesn't remember escaping. But she does remember running through the Hedge, thorns tearing at her skirts and cutting her warty skin. She suddenly arrived at the edge of a highway near a truck stop in upstate New York. It was 15 years after her departure.
She spent the next few years as many Lost do, searching for loved ones. Making her way back to Portland, Maine, she found her family; her mother had passed, and the Fetch that took Susan's place had managed to get a job as a head manager at a Wal-Mart. The Fetch was rather dictatorial, but her siblings were all better off financially. Susan didn't feel right interfering, and guiltily felt a burden lifted from her shoulders. After some soul-searching, she was mentored into the Autumn Court in a Portland freehold. Taking the new name of Esther Buckingham, she earned her keep doing what a fairy tale witch does: hexing and scaring. She also did some baking, and her favorite, sewing. But a rivalry with a fellow Lost got intense, and she decided to wander on, going farther north and east along the coast, doing odd jobs. She spent a few years in Aleswich, Maine. Then it was time to move on, and she began to wander again, this time inland, stopping at this freehold and that. And now she arrives at Fate's Harvest.
