Overview

About eight years ago, Samuel Argyle Long was just your average college student. He wasn't the best academically, but he was a breakout star on U Vermont's track and field team, and he wasn't in danger of flunking out, at least. Life was good.

Then, unexpectedly, he dropped out and moved back to his hometown of Fort Brunsett, where he now works as a construction worker. Or so most people think, anyway. In truth, something bad happened to Sam, and the man wearing his face nowadays isn't the real Sam at all. The real Sam now calls himself Briar Jameson, and he's barely recognizable as the man he once was.

Briar Jameson didn't drop out of college. He was Taken, stolen away to Arcadia and put through his own personal Hell in a nightmare forest filled with predators. When he finally made his escape, there was barely anything human left in him. It was buried too deep, under miles and miles of animal terror that he didn't know how to control. If it weren't for the Blackbird Bishopric, he would have died alone and terrified in an alley somewhere, more hare than man.

But he didn't. And when the Bishops had finished putting him back together, he realized that he couldn't think of any cause more worthy of dedicating his life to than theirs.

Bishop Briar

“The Dude abides.”
The Big Lebowski

      So he did.

After subduing the animal terror that was so strong in him upon his initial escape from the Hedge, Briar swore himself to the Bishopric of Blackbirds. Now Briar the Wandering Bishop has garnered something of a reputation as one of the Bishopric's most steady and dependable operatives in the state. He travels from freehold to freehold, searching for anyone in need of a Bishop's attention - and there are always at least a few - and helping them to heal before setting out again. During his wanderings, he's faced down violently deranged Lost, pulled recent escapees from the jaws of voracious briarwolves, and even taken part in a few daring raids on Privateer holdings to rescue the captives there and ensure their health afterwards.

Now, after more than seven years, he's finally arrived in Fort Brunsett. With both his Fetch and his parents still in town, it's anyone's guess what happens next, but he seems content to take things slowly. His primary concern seems to be putting out feelers in the local freehold, searching for anyone in need of a Bishop's assistance.

After all, there's always someone who needs a Blackbird.

The Mien

Briar is one tall, lanky sonofagun. He stands at nearly six and a half feet in height, with a hell of a lot of that being in his legs. He's got a long, narrow face to match that long, narrow body, too, capped by a thick head of coarse brown fur, interspersed with occasional black feathers, that runs down the back of his neck and disappears beneath the collar of his shirt. Below, a pair of bright green eyes contrast sharply with his pale skin - or, at least, one eye does. The other has a ragged scar dragged across it, and the socket is empty, as if the eye has simply been scooped out. Not that this appears to bother him; he tends to wear a slightly crooked, faintly knowing smile, and when that spreads to become a grin - which is often - he reveals a set of rather impressively large buck teeth.

The most eye-catching thing about him, though, is the ears. They're huge, and very obviously a hare's rather than a human's. They're set higher up on his head and stick up for almost a foot, covered in the same brown fur that serves as his hair. His hands are also obviously not quite normal: the nails are thick, rough, black, and closer to claws or talons than anything else.

Despite the skeletal impression that a first glance might give, he's actually pretty well-muscled. His skinniness is a matter of proportion rather than lack of muscle mass. He's not a bodybuilder by any stretch, but he's obviously fit. The light jackets, jeans, and T-shirts he generally dresses in aren't loose enough to entirely hide that. Most of his clothing is pretty old, if well taken care of, save for the pair of running shoes on his feet. Those are always obviously new, and obviously pretty expensive. Those aside, the only interesting thing he wears is a small necklace in the shape of a blackbird.

RP Hooks

  • Changeling - He's quite Lost, though not quite as lost as some others.
  • Courtless - He's never quite found a Court that fits. Care to proselytize?
  • Bishopric of Blackbirds - Everybody needs a Blackbird eventually.
  • Fame 2 (Wandering Bishop) - He's rescued and rehabilitated changelings all across the state.
  • Yoga Instructor - Great way to get yourself relaxed.
  • Personal Trainer - He's been known to work as one of these occasionally.
  • Running - He's fast, he doesn't get tired, and he's doing this a lot. Maybe he's passed you during your morning jog.
  • Music - He plays bass. Care to groove?

Soundtrack

"Hakuna Matata" - The Lion King

Hakuna Matata
What a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata
Ain't no passing craze
It means no worries
For the rest of your days
It's our problem-free philosophy
Hakuna Matata

"Drift Away" - Dobie Gray

And when my mind is free, you know melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue, guitar's comin' through to soothe me
Thanks for the joy that you're givin' me
I want you to know that I believe in your song
Rhythm and rhyme and harmony
You help me along
Oh, you're makin' me strong

"Songs From The Wood" - Jethro Tull

Let me bring you songs from the wood
To make you feel much better than you could know
Dust you down from tip to toe
Show you how the garden grows
Hold you steady as you go
Join the chorus if you can
It'll make of you an honest man

"Singin' in the Rain" - Singin' in the Rain

Let the stormy clouds chase everyone from the place
Come on with the rain, I've a smile on my face
I'll walk down the lane with a happy refrain
And singin', just singin' in the rain
Why am I smilin' and why do I sing?
Why does December seem sunny as Spring?
Why do I get up each morning to start happy
And get up with joy in my heart?
Why is each new task a trifle to do?
Because I am livin' a life full of you
