Utridge Family

'No' is never forever

History

Arriving on the scene in 1863, second-youngest of the Seven Families, the Utridges have been clinging to the lowermost rung of "upper" class for the past century and a half, producing myriad upwardly mobile offspring. Originally focusing on banking, business and genteel trading, the family has tried, and failed, to break into the political scene of Fort Brunsett.

Famous in the family for his success, the Honorable Mr. Jared Utridge, a local judge, managed to acquire political office and hold it for a whole four years in the early 1870s before his excesses resulted in a quiet dismissal. Not before certain alliances had been cemented with the Alexanders... Again, an Utridge managed to be elected to a minor position in 1885, and a third time in 1890, but since that year, no Utridge has ever successfully won an election in the Brunsett area. At least one Utridge is on every ballot, and the family does continue to hold positions of material wealth and power, but control over the city itself eludes them.

These days the core group has begun to branch out into the hospitality business, trying to draw in tourist dollars in a shameless effort at attracting positive attention to the Utridge name. The family maintains a handful of speedboats docked on Lake Brunsett, and while family homes are often in the vicinity, the patriarch prefers to dwell in the Red Clover Hotel.

Timeline

See the Player-Created Timeline if you're interested in easy family hooks with other players.

Allies

  • Alexander Family - Tenuous allies at best, the Utridges and Alexanders understand the value of keeping one's options open, however illegal those options may be. The Utridges are classier, cleaner, more political, but they and the Alexanders are cut from very similar cloth.

Enemies

  • Miller Family - Due to a canoodling incident with Great Uncle Benjamin "Binks" Utridge and two of the Miller women (Edith and Caroline, both NPCs), the families, while both invited to similar parties, do not get along.

Holdings

City. The Utridges have unanimously been blocked from any and all political positions in the town of Tamarack Falls, and land owners will not sell to them.

  • Red Clover Hotel - FB05 - The Red Clover Hotel, named after Vermont's state flower, is both the family 'home' of sorts and a source of tourist income for the Utridges. Any Utridges may take a room in the private family wing for free until they piss off the others. Then they pay rent.

Concepts

  • Common Professions - Bankers, Politicians, Newscasters, Lawyers, Accountants, Socialites, 'Philanthropists' who do it for the publicity, not necessarily from actual philanthropy...
  • Resources - only lower than 3+ if the family member has learned nothing at the knees of his grandpappy. Typically 4.
  • Wanted Concepts
    • Bankers
    • Flexible Lawyers
    • Shady Accountants
    • Socialites & Host/esses

Influence

  • Influence 5 - NPC family head.
  • Influence 4 - You've got some serious pull with the family, and the ear of the current matriarch/patriarch. People know they shouldn't get on your bad side, and you've got the influence to reward folks who stay on your good side. Maybe you own a family business, maybe you host family gatherings, maybe you go out of your way to make the family name a household name.
  • Influence 3 - You have done the family some good turns, and members know they can count on you to get jobs done. Maybe you manage a family business, or attend a lot of family gatherings and don't shove your foot in your mouth often enough to lose respect.
  • Influence 2 - You're active and doing stuff which the family likes. Relatives don't hate you.
  • Influence 1 - Hurra! You're a member of the family. You start here. Anyone marrying in starts here.

Opinions

Supernatural

The Utridge family is 'supernatural agnostic' as a general rule. It isn't "live and let live" -- it's "live until you inconvenience us" or "live as long as your presence benefits us" as far as the majority of the family is concerned.

Would they sell out a relative?

You bet your Betsy they would, if it would give them political/social/financial clout somehow.

A lot of family members think it's a steaming heap of horse muffins and refuse to give credence to psychic powers or 'fairies' in the slightest, but the higher-ups are well aware that these 'supers' are real, and have real power, and they are always on the lookout for ways to manipulate that power for their -- and the family's -- benefit.
