A group goes out for the day and discovers a shocking surprise.

Location

ER07 Fisher's Footing

The weather is turning colder now that Autumn is starting to finally settle in and that means that people are out and looking into things. Fisher's Footing is on the East Bank and a notorious hide away for those that want to try to find weird stuff or who just want to get away. The sky above is overcast and there's the threat of rain, but none is supposed to let loose until later. Or so we hope.

Autumn weather means it's an absolutely lovely day for a walk! Or so that must be what's going through one woman's head, since the frail-looking lady is just strolling along the way, basking in the autumnal breeze. She's dressed nicely, if plainly, even - a pair of slacks, a nice blouse, nice pair of boots, and a lightweight wool walking coat. She'd might as well be on the streets of Fort Brunsett proper, or a larger city. But here Sterling is - a bit out of the way.

Nathania strolls along, wearing jeans and a sweater, nothing too fancy, under a grey hoodie and hiking boots on her feet. She looks around the area, enjoying the autumnal leaves as they change color on the trees--sometimes vacating the trees entirely, bare branches reaching for the sky.

Cold isn't a bother to Levi. It is, technically, but she's used to being cold, and between her track pants and her leather jacket, she's got some decent windbreaking going on. She's with Teagan, hands tucked into her jacket, pacing alongside them and watching the ground at her feet as they stroll about. She's still strained from their battle in the Hedge, and needs to get away from people, and Fisher's Footing seems like just the place to escape the crowds.

The Darkling next to Levi has their hood flipped up over their head (because sunshine) and one hand in their pocket. The other's absently petting Levi's back. Teags is in Super Chill Mode, possibly from babysitting the upset noob, but their Mantle is still broiling heat. Some things can't be helped.

Were it not for his usual wintry bearing Omari might've been annoyed, if not angered by the stark change in weather when returning to Vermont. He's not much at all dressed for the weather in cargo shorts, a tank top, and tennis shoes. However, the hedge beast at his side keeps his anger in check as the pair begin to walk along the path.

"Nice day for a walk," greets Sterling, leisurely, as she comes to a stop along the bridge. Who's it to? Whoever's closest to the woman, most likely, while she leans against the steel gating. Her voice is chill and British, with a reasonably proper inflection to it. It's reasonably fitting of her overall look.

Nathania looks to Sterling, nodding at the greeting. "It is," she agrees quietly. "Beautifully... chilly and... atmospheric. I do.. so love... autumn. Not as much... as winter, but hey." She smiles. The rag doll would have dimples in her human guise; instead, she has brief little French knots on her cheeks. Adorable.

Levi pads along with Teagan, their contact helping her to keep calm and steady despite the thinning crowds they're weaving through. As they reach the bridge, she looks up as she hears Nat's voice, blinking and smiling faintly to see a familiar face. "Teagan. It's Nat, look."

"Oh, hey, yeah," agrees Teagan simply enough, raising their hand: their scarred palm's turned toward Nathania and waved briefly. "Yo." The fractured-mirrors of Teagan's eyes make it sort of impossible to tell where they're looking, but chances are they are looking, in turn, generally about.

"I do find the breath of endings to be interesting; more than when it feels like the Earth is simply holding its breath in wait. You can only sleep so long," commentates Sterling, presumably about the state of autumn vs. winter. She reaches into a pocket, taking out a tin of mints, about the time that Levi and Teagan's voices drift towards her ears. A nod is given in their direction, and before popping a mint into her mouth, she wonders of Nathania, "Friends of yours?"

Let's go for a walk they said. It'll be fun they said. Nothing is probably fun about this. They're just walking along when all of the sudden there's the sound of scales running over rocks and something rather large bites onto the back of his hedge beasts leg. It would appear to be...another hedge beast? Who the hell lets another hedge beast of that size run around?

There's a lot of conversations going on, the river rushing by does a lot to help with not being able to hear noises. What they do hear is the snap of bone and for those with keen senses the smell of bone fills the air. A rather large hedge beast snake, one that's been left to it's own devices has attacked Omari's dog and doesn't seem to be wanting to let go for the moment.

The wolf-like creature at Omari's side lets out a howl of pain that has the Beast searching for the cause immediately. "'The fuck are you?" he growls at the thing. The air around him heats as his anger boils over. Romulus begins to hobble around to stand behind Omari as best it can, and for all the anger it tries to show it whimpers in pain.

Nathania smiles to Levi and Teagan. "Yes. My name is... Nathania," she says to Sterling then. "It's... a pleasure... to meet you." Her button eyes see nothing amiss as she watches the incoming pair and keeps an eye on Sterling. The howl of pain from the dog has her turning. "Oh no!" she gasps.

Levi returns Nat's smile with a small one of her own, and waves faintly at Sterling when greeted, but hearing the dog yelp and whimper draws her attention in a heartbeat. She flits her eyes to Teagan, her breath quickening a touch, but she tamps that down after a moment and turns back towards the injured dog and the snake, and draws herself up, leveling a glare at the snake to try to scare it off or draw its attention!

"Hungry." The snake hisses back as it recoils back from Omari. "Master didn't come back. Said he'd be gone a day." it states. "Don't know how long that's been." it states. It doesn't go for the dog again. But it does look to the others when it notices other people. "So hungry..." it's tongue flicks out as it tastes the air.

"Oh shit." Teagan stops in the middle of the introductions, their left hand falling to underneath their hoodie. (Interesting fact: in Vermont it is legal to carry a machete openly or concealed. No word from the state of Vermont on the legality of rusty machetes that always have blood on their blades.) "... bro?" The Squire breaks from the cluster of socializing Lost and heads toward Omari.

"I wouldn't recommend going for anyone else; unless you want to quickly end this day as dead instead of merely hungry," warns Sterling, seemingly incredibly calm considering there's a HUGE FRAKKING SNAKE and she merely looks human. The state of calm that pervades her might otherwise hint, though. "If you're so hungry, I'd suggest a deer or something of the sort - unless you're incapable of hunting for yourself?" Her eyes slide over to Levi, who's being incredibly scary, and she's speaking in spite of that... but it may put a damper on things.

Between Levi's death glare and Sterling's cool words the large python looking hedge beast snake starts to slink backwards into the water. "Master took care of the food for me. I did the books." there's a nod of the big head. But they look wary. Not like they're going to try to eat anyone else. There's a look to Omari, then to the big dog behind him, "I'm sorry." it states.

Omari squats down to look over the canine hedge beast's injuries, ears twitching as everyone speaks. He gives a pointed glare to the snake when he's done, but doesn't leave Romulus' side just yet. "Your asshole of a master's been gone more than a fucking day if you think you can do that kinda stupid shit," he growls. As the Summer stands back to his full height the dog tugs at his leg to growl something up to him. "Who the fuck was your master, and where was the last place you saw 'em?"

Nathania watches out for anything else coming up behind them. Because, well. Winter. She's paranoid.

Oh. Shit. It's just hungry. And polite about it. Levi lets up pretty quickly, pulling back the mountainous pressure of her disdain. She opens her mouth when she sees Teagan pulling away, but shuts it and curls her arms in around herself instead. The snake is behaving, apologizing, Teagan's not THAT far away... it's fine.

"...It sounds like you need a new master. Were you content doing the books before, with your master bringing you food?" wonders Sterling, though she does seem a little more inclined to let Omari take over. He is a Beast, afterall, and she's... well, who knows what she is, except for Sterling herself. Her pale blue gaze shifts over to Levi and Teagan next, and she wonders of the two, "What of you? Are you interested in having a snake for a familiar?"

"My girlfriend has a cat," Teagan opines. Yes, that's the reason why! Green has a cat. No other reason. Not because Teagan can't imagine having a living beeing dependent on them. It's fiiiiine. "I mean. I dunno. Levs, if you think you can keep it from eating Lucy." It was just attacking a dog. And Teagan's hand does stay riiiight on that machete.

Nathania shakes her head at Sterling. "I'm... not," she says, even though she wasn't asked. "I have... bunnies at.. my place. No good." But she glances back to the snake. "what... are you... hungry for? Can we bring... you anything?" She keeps an eye toward the rear, even as she talks to the snake in question.

The snake waits on the banks, large head poking out of the reeds. He wasn't the best at socializing, but he could speak when needed. And boy could he apologize! "I saw him last floating down here. He told me he'd be back in a bit." he tells Omari. Then there's a look back to the others. Too many questions. "I've been eating stray cats. One's that don't have collars and names..." it trails off. "I know that's bad probably. But as Bob Barker said..." he trails off again. "I like researching. And they wouldn't let me hunt. Said snakes weren't really native to Vermont." he states.

"I- I dunno," murmurs Levi, crouching where she is and peering at the snake. "I don't... really know what I'd need to do to take care of it. You. Sorry. Um. You'd need food... of some sort..? And a place to stay..? I'm- staying with someone else right now. I can't promise she'd be okay with that. Um... where have you been hanging out right now? Just... hiding under the bridge?"

"Wait, before all that. What's your -name-?"

"Remus will eat him," Romulus is quick to bark. It then angrily adds, "I will eat him too." This warrants a sigh from Omari, but the Beast doesn't disagree. "I gotta place just outta town. Woods and all that shit, and plenty o' deer there too. Not too great a time to hunt with the winter, but that's when we get inventive." He turns to the others, arms outstretched. "Any of you want to take it and take care of it?"

There is a faint sigh, that might be on the level of exasperation a weary college professor gives, and it comes from Sterling. The small woman straightens her up, and says, "I will need to find a larger place to stay, but it can at least come with me until it finds a new master. I could use assistance with research and a guardian; and do not mind bringing game of various types back for it. Provided it doesn't eat me while I sleep, so a Pledge will be mandatory." The way she says it, 'game' may or may not include other hobs of various shapes.

Nathania tilts her head. "That works... for me." She frowns softly. "I wish... I could help, but... Itsuki and Haruki... are very protective... of their rabbits."

"I'm Ferrum. Master was an out of towner. So I'm not sure what happened." the snake explains. Dude probably got into it with the locals and got axed. "I've been hiding in this area. Coming out at night to eat and trying not to spook the people that come down here to fish." he tells them. "And I don't want to kill anyone. I just want to sit and read and watch tv and eat Pringles. And the occasional steak." he bobs his head up and down.

"Yeah, I'm not much with research," drolls Teagan, adding, "How are you at reading sexts quietly?" Total deadpan, there. "Thanks, Sterling," they offer toward the New Person They Just Met. "I mean, Levs, if you want the snake, just talk to Green first, I don't... think it's a good idea to just bring that home." Captain Obvious, thanks!

"I would never!" Levi protests. "And besides, it sounds like the nice, clever lady has a place for him. Can I come visit, miss? I feel bad for being so rude to Ferrum when he was just hungry, -even if- he shouldn't have tried to nibble on someone's friend."

Levi offers helpfully, "I can bring Pringles..?"

"I want... to visit, too," Nathania says quietly. "I'll... bring steak. Raw or cooked, Ferrum?"

Ferrum looks at everyone and the snake doesn't know how to react for a few, then he bobs his head up and down, "Sure." he tells them. "Cooked or raw is fine. I'm not picky." he admits.

"Pringles," repeats Sterling, deadpan, in what might be a state of disapproval. She lets out a short breath though, and nods to Levi soon afterwards with a statement of, "I guess it wouldn't hurt. You could probably help move things; and I suppose I never planned well to begin with." She does sound lowkey grumpy and displeased, but it's in something of a matronly way more than outright ire. "I imagine you will need a heat lamp, as well, and proper bedding for the coming winter. In addition to actual food other than pringles." She doesn't sound opposed, just... severe.

Nathania nods with a smile. "Okay." She looks to Sterling. "I'd be... happy to help... with the heat lamp... cost." She says this shyly.

Ferrum looks about the group and then starts to slither completely out of the water. He's pretty big, "I'm used to a cardboard box and a blanket, so hey, that sounds like an upgrade." he tells her as he slithers her way. Apparently a new home had been found. A good deed had been done. Now the day could go on.

And remember to have your pets spayed or neutered.

"I wouldn't mind moving stuff at all," confirms Levi with a faint smile as she stands. "I'll see you later, then, Ferrum." Levi scribbles her number onto a sheet from her pocket notebook, and offers it to Sterling. "Call me later so I have your number and can come visit, okay?"
