The first leg of looking for a suitable place to call "home" for the Harvestmen begins at the summit of the mountain. Expect a chance of rain or pain. If you're lucky (or not) you may even see some snow! Just pray the Men of Snow don't find you, if true. Part of Real Estate

It's the afternoon, and the Hedge is as alive as ever. This high up it's easy to see the scope of the Hedge, but the green goes on far too for anyone to truly see its vastness. The usual, wild cacophony of the Hedge can barely be heard, and the only living things to be seen are birds big enough to snatch up a child that appear content to leave the Lost to their duties. The path set before them is narrow, and beset by stone on all sides.

Beatrice is dressed in some military surplus winter camo pants and has on a fur-collared brown jacket over a red stained white T-shirt. She has no weapons with her or supplies, just seven feet and change of Beatrice.

Paige shows up, on time and hyped to go. She's got a knife at each hip, is damn near bouncing on her toes, and has falcon perched on her shoulder. She's waiting, watching, but the bird? He's preening. Not his feathers, no. /Her/ feathers. So weird, especially since she's allowing it.

Byron grunts softly as he takes a look at the path ahead of them, pursing his lips for a moment, "Don't have a lot of room to spread out. Just remember: Don't go off alone. Keep an eye on the group. If you get attacked by something you can't see, call it out so everyone else can triangulate on it. If we run into hobs, watch your step, especially if it starts snowing." He glances over the rest of the group for a moment, lifting both brows, "You see something, call it out. A hollow entrance might not look like much from out here. The best ones won't. Any questions?"

Beau is crouched on a rock, surveying the hedge, an unlit cigarette dangling out of his mouth. He must have dug into his old gear, as he has on a pair of camo fatigue pants, that's paired with one of his usual black tees, though this one has the sleeves ripped off as not to interfere with the large metal spikes that protrude from between his golden scales, which seem extra shiny today. The Fairest has his combat face on, that is to say, marginally more grumpy than usual. Most oddly of all he has no visible weapons on him, but is cracking his knuckles something fierce as he stares off into the distance, though from the tilt of his head he is listening to Byron.

For as much as she prides herself on stealth, Veronica arrives weaponless but apparently not defenseless. Her skin crackles with subtle sparks of electricity, a faint glow pulsing along her veins. She arrives with a sleek leather jacket, slim pants, and motorcycle boots for kicking things. Spying Paige, she flashes the feathery ogre a wide smile and moves to stand not too far away. Her expression falters, then, eyes narrowing as her gaze slowly sweeps the area. "No questions here," she tells Byron, giving the man a sharp nod.

Rails is punctual. It's one of the things he prides himself on. That and, you know, being generally able to keep up with all manner of Lost without breaking much of a sweat. He shows up, sans mein because he's Fae-Touched and not nearly as magically mutated as the others. All decked out like he's about to kick in some dudes door and light up his life. Cop'd out. Guns. Knives. Gloves. Baseball cap. You know the look. All black and all sexy. "Roger, Roger." He says in agreement to Byron, the boss of the evening. "Only question I got is who wants to make a bet?"

Paige grins at Byron, nodding, and even the falcon nods. When Veronica arrives she returns the smile. "Ready to find us a home and maybe kick some ass?" she asks the woman, all to ready to move. Subtle isn't something this one really seems to get. She hears the word bet though, and perks up, as much as she can, and looks to Rails. "What sorta bet?"

Byron chuckles softly at the responses, "Alright. If you end up in the middle, keep an eye overhead and those big damned birds, if you end up at the back, make sure something's not coming up our asses. Whoever finds a place we keep, I buy all their drinks tonight. Deal? So beat me to it." He winks at that, and waits a moment to make sure their aren't any actual questions, letting the chatter about a bet bounce around before he starts off down the path.

"Maybe? Maybe? You mean definitely," Veronica winks at Paige, her smile widening in a lopsided fashion. "Definitely kicking some ass," she gives the feathered woman a cheeky salute. "All the drinks? Damn, I'm on it," she laughs a little over at Byron's words, pleased. "I always like a bet," she nods from Paige to Rails, one brow lifting curiously. Restless with standing in place, she starts to take a few steps forward, clearly eager to get a move on.

The path proves to be narrow, but easy enough to go through for the larger folks. Upon the rocks the group can make out various glyphs and signs carved into the stone, although its clearly not something of human or sane origin. The ones easily made out are a heart with a diamond carved inside of it, a wolf's head, and something similar in shape to the birds flying high above.

Beau stands up, rolling one arm to loosen up his shoulder. "Well, let's get this show on the road, eh?" He plucks the cig from his mouth and tucks it behind his ear before hopping off his rock to join the rest of the group as they prepare to descend further into the hedge. "Oughta' be fun, at least."

As they exit the narrow passage they find a large opening in the stone with several stones lined up in odd fashion. Each carries with it engravings that snake and curl around the them. The only commonality is that each line cut into the rocks curves with a point northwest. Any closer inspection betrays that small, almost miniscule gems have been shoved inside of those false veins along with a faint pulsing that echoes the closer one gets to it. The only true exits appear further north towards another narrow passage or a cave that leads into the mountain proper.

Paige grins at Veronica before she eyes Byron. "You better be buying those at Cyclone," she tells him before she grins. The falcon gets a little nudge, just to wake him up, it seems, as she, too, gets ready to go go go. Luckily, she's narrow! It's easy for her to maneuver the passage.

Byron occassionally glances up, but a majority of his attention os focused down the path, and what ends up underfoot, depending on the rest of the team to call something out if something shows up around or behind them. He chuckles softly at Paige and murmurs, "You make me a discount and I'll buy em there." When the passage opens up, he straightens up a little and cranes his head around to look over the stones lining the opening, slowing to a stop there for a second. He glances further north at the passage or cave that heads that way, then nods towards the odd symbols, "I don't recognize these. They mean anything to anyone else? Picking anything up from them?"

Even if it is the Hedge, tramping through the wilderness is tramping through the wilderness as far as Beau is concerned, and he actually feels at home going it despite the oddness of the hedge. He snorts softly at Paige's comment. "I'll agree to that, but only because I don't want to relax where I work." He slows a little as they pass the false veins, peering at the gems through squinted eyes. "We must be getting close to something." He looks over at Byron. "You're the autumn."

Some of those symbols can be identifiable as landmarks around the immediate area, and a kilometer or so outside the summit of the mountain. A few mark noteworthy hedge beasts, and those of a more dangerous variety: the worst of them being worms that burrow through the mountain itself. The most obvious set of symbols speak of the stones, their power, and their sacred nature. At best, they're holy. At worst, they're the "life's blood" of something else.

Byron grunts softly, "Could be a warning from a current owner, could be a warning from a previous victim, could be a 'come on in, I need more victims' trap. Paige? Veronica? Rails? If no one picks up anything, lets take a look. You see anything twitchy, pull up. The rest of us will follow you in and watch our backs." Byron has, perhaps not coincidentally, chosen all of the shorter people to step in first.

There shouldn't rightly be anything up here aside from, maybe, a few beasts. However, far up above something is there. Watching them. Long shadows standing even taller than the tallest among the Changelings that signify their attentions with a few seemingly pointing at them. As quickly as they may be seen they slink back past the horizon and are clearly using the sun high above as a facsimilie of cover as that's all the Changelings are left to stare up at.

Inside the cave the same thrumming as before can be heard. However, it comes in a whisper with every beating. It's damned difficult to see, let alone following. There are lines cut into the cave's walls as the stones outside, although those gems light up with a very faint glow as the heartbeat passes along.

Darkness. This place has an eerie feeling to it, and there isn't a damned thing to see. Something sounds like it may be shifting or moving in here, but it could just as likely be the cadre that passes into the mouth of the cave.

Byron quirks a brow at Beatrice, "Are these stones tied to this entrance? If they move with the Hedge shifting, are they taking this with them, as best you can tell?" He puts a foot down on the edge of the entrance threshhold as if somehow that's going to keep it from suddenly closing on them like a deactivating Gate, while the others step through, "If the whole thing moves, this probably wont work well for what we need, even if we can anchor a Door elsewhere. His attention gets distracted as he speaks, taking his attention off of the folks leading in, to glance up and around.

"A free beer for police protection? Sure, sounds like a great deal to me. I'll put my head in the stove too, maybe take a nap..." He half mutters as he's stalking into the cave. He can't see a damned thing and starts patting himself down for the flashlight. "If the whole thing moves where? I hear something moving now. I can't afford to miss work tomorrow, Byron. My desk looks like a library puked on it already."

Paige brushes a finger over those stones before she looks over when Rails turns on the flashlight. She blinks at the figures, then looks to the others in the cave. "Huh. Well, guess that means this place is occupied?" she asks, looking back to where the figures darted away.

"Noooope," Veronica beats a hasty retreat, light on her feet as she pivots to go the way they came. "Too occupied for my tastes, unless we want to have a good time clearing them out," she mutters to Paige.

Byron grunts softly, "If there's something bigger than a breadbox in there, let it go, c'mon out before something gets bitey. We'll keep looking." and come back to evict them later if we have to, goes the unfinished sentence from the gargoyle. Glancing up again, he murmurs to Beau, "You see them anymore?" A pause, "Lets group back up and keep on further north for now."

Beau shakes his head slowly is response to Byron's question. "Not at the moment, doesn't mean they're not there." His eyes are darting around, mostly upwards, but he shifts his head occasionally, there's no way he's going to rest of be still until the group is either fighting those things or moving away.

While the group may be departing, they're not going to be leaving just yet. Several of the robed figures appear at both of the narrow passages despite the only sound to be heard coming from the roaring wind. They each speak and move as one, their actions completely unified. There appears to be twelve at each entrance, and double that coming from the cave. From the collected cadre five step forward: two from each pathway and one from the mouth of the cave.

As each does they do away with their robes, and the group is only able to see their true form for a second. No bigger than a man, although anything from it. Four arms on each one, a single eye, and shriveled, earthen-colored flesh that's gone in an instant. Their transformation is swift, almost hasty. The moment the sun touches their flesh they grow large enough to dwarf the tallest of the Harvestmen.

As they are now they're more akin to an alien gorilla than anything completely human. They roar as they begin their slow lope to the group, and from the back the noise rises. The others begin chanting. The words, at least, sound human, although it's weird. The words they speak are off, clearly unfamiliar, and even a speaker of the most analogous tongue would find them strange.

Growling, sure two can play at that game and Beau turns towards the group closest to him, roaring back, rather unsuccessfully. But he does look pissed, so that's something, it's just not the most impressive roar he could have let out, and sounded a bit more growly and annoyed than roaringly angry.

Paige doesn't seem to mind being roared at, just tilting her head at that. But then one of them comes after her? Well, she's not going to stand still! Her knives come out, black, sharp, and she yells back as she slashes out with one of the knives toward the one that came after her.

The chanting only grows louder, and drowns out much of the roaring of the larger creatures. Their chanting causes the ground below to shake, but a look above betrays that there's nothing volcanic going on. Instead, several thin poles of rock shoot into the air, the first to the left of Paige. As this happens the Vedmak from the cave leaps forward, and wails into Paige with all six of its fists.

Still nearby Paige, Veronica's gaze flashes with anger as the creatures close in on the harpy. With a scowl, and sparks flashing from her fingertips, she rushes in for a quick and dirty swing of a clenched fist.

Once all Hell breaks loose and cycloptic gorilla mutants start streaking at them, Rails takes a step back. Surprised? Yeah. Yeah, he is. It's been almost a decade and he's still shocked by the oddity of this life. Once Beau roars at the group of Vedmak, Danny Rails steps forward. "ROAR!" He literally yells as he blasts a shot at one of the easy targets. Hellfire and lead, baby.

Beatrice looks to either side as the creatures close in, then towards the stones that they have resting on her front door. Picking what she feels is a likely target. Sliding her hands over the stone to find a likely spot first, she then cinches her hands and before violently wrenching the pillar. It snaps in her arms, The broken stone resting on one shoulder like a log as she eyes the creatures. Raising her voice, she shouts at the ones chanting. "Hey, vrediteli!" She nods to the pillar on her shoulder, then to the cliff to the side. "You vant play this game?"

When the creatures start closing in, Byron growls at the group, "Gang up and take them down faster. Four injured mouths bite harder than 2 live and 2 dead ones!" And with that said, steps in to bring his axe down on the poor thing that decided to pick on Paige.

The two Vedmak near the north aren't going anywhere, and look to get their piece of the action. Rather, to get their piece of Paige. The first set of punches come before she gets a chance to recover from the first hail of blows. The next comes at her side and into her shoulder as their roaring never ceases. However, the shot from Rails is enough with her wyrd protections, and he crumples after delivering that stiff blow.

The remaining Vedmak were gunning for Paige like the rest, but it's another interloper that draws that intention away in a blink. The roaring of the remaining transformed only grows louder until they've call completely turned away from Paige to look upon Beatrice. Those final two in the pack are moving faster than they normally would, and each begins punching into back and side of the woman.

"Ugh, fuck off!" Veronica wails on the nearest Vedmak. Her tactics are not clean or professional. They involve pointedly placed kicks and zappy throttling with fingers that glow and spark. There's a distinct electric crackling noise as she scuffles with the creature after Paige.

Chk-CHACK! Rails racks another round and starts advancing. "Hey. Stop that." BOOM! The shotgun barks fire and violence. Ripping a sizeable hole into the new target that's attacking Beatrice. "Just can't REASON with some people!" He says as he pumps the shotgun again.

"Yeah!" Paige chimes in after Byron axes her attacker. She luckily doesn't take any longer than that to gloat, though. Which is good, since she's getting punched again, which makes her snarl. Her hair and feathers swirl about her with the air protecting her, and the falcon, for the moment, presses against her neck. Probably figures it's safe...ish. Which, of course, it isn't, since she goes from /taking/ punching to stabbing, letting out an angry yell and damn near leaping on one of them, just...knife first.

While some of the robed Vedmak near the south are frightened away, the rest remain ever vigilant. Their chanting increases in pace, and reaches a fever pitch when one of the stones is taken from the earth. While two of the transformed are ready to keep assaulting the woman the stone rises up further and faster still. At a very noticeable cadence each stone juts from the ground until the overlarge woman finds herself caged behind rocky rails, and their continued chanting is pulling even more stone from the earth.

Beau lets out another bellow and charges into the group of Vedmak that look like they're doing hocus pocus. He's certain of one thing that might trip them up more than roaring at them, which didn't seem to help too much. He charges forward into the group, laying into them with taloned hands. But it's not the wild strikes of a animal or berserker, he's laying into them with a purpose and skill, claws pulling apart flesh in a gruesome display.

"Oh! Did that make you angry, vrediteli?" Beats shifts the weight of the broken pillar on her shoulder, turning and tossing it like a shotput off the side of the cliff. She turns her attention to the two that have interest in her, focusing attention on the one that is proving the larger threat. She gives it a smile that unnerved farm machinery. "Tell me, how do you feel now?"

The Vedmak's attention was locked on the stone as it goes flying over, and all of the transformed Vedmak roar in response. While it doesn't come to the same effect as the chanting, it does cause the ground to briefly shake. It looks back to Beatrice, and without a second of hesitation starts punching with everything it has.

With Paige's first attacker taken out, Byron doesn't have time to consider her getting knocked down/out, there are still critters to deal with. Unfortunately when he takes a swing at the one outside Beatrice's cage, he catches a whole lot of stone path and no squishy reward.

Pow. Right in the ... is it a face? Veronica swings for whatever it is, anyway, sparks flying as her fist makes contact. It's hard for her to concentrate on everything going on, between the shots fired and stones throwing. The latter makes her eyes widen for a beat, but she resumes her determined assault. "You okay?" she asks Paige, sounding a little breathless.

"Come on, people! Focus fire! Drag Black Canary away from-" BOOM! Rails sends a shot into the Wierdo Beastman outside that strange cage. CHk-CHACK. Pumping another round into place, he keeps advancing. "The edge. And what the FUCK did we just toss off the side a mountain?!"

The hobs still seemed pissed off beyond belief, and after one of the stones has gone sailing over the side of the mountain it's only gotten worse. Where just the interloper was being chased down the game has now turned into fun for the whole family. While the last to touch the stones is inside with Beatrice the others change their targets. One leaps to Paige, and without another thought begins punching her into the earth. However, the act brings about its own demise. Byron's opponent is just as furious, and trying to bring as much pain as possible. It only gets bruised knuckles for its trouble, and nary a dent on the Ogre.

Except the harpy is -obviously not okay because she is on the ground.- "Fuuuuck," she scowls, giving the rest of the group a frantic look over a shoulder.

Paige is most definitely on the ground. Unconcious, still (which never happens) and oblivious to being beaten on! But her falcon isn't leaving her side. He's preening hard core, trying to wake her up!

The ground shakes again, although it's not centered around a single individual as before. The entire area seems to be experiencing tremors until there's a whole lot more shade here than there was before. Anyone looking towards that northern path'll see that a wall of stone is rising up with every other syllable of chanting. It goes up bit by bit until that path appears to be permanently cut off for the time being.

Beau is focused on his new friend. Laying into the cyclopean thing, shredding bits of flesh from bone. Despite the earlier shouting and the heat of battle, Beau looks as grumpy as ever. He's not enjoying himself, he's just going about his job, though maybe because his hits aren't landing as solidly as he'd hope. Is that, just a hint of frustration on his face.

Beats takes a brutal hit from the Vedmak, those arms flailing at her and offering little relief. Attention now on them, she clenches her hands into the fist, proceeding to match the blows by hitting the Vedmak in the knuckles with her own. When she has done enough harm to pause the strike, she begins grinning at the creature through the blood in her teeth. "You are good! But how do they say..." She crouches for a split second, coming up into the creature's jaw with a brutal uppercut and resulting crunch. "Not that good."

One of the few remaining transformed attempts to take off Beau's head, but all that rage and fury over a lost stone do nothing. Instead, it takes that overeager anger, and tries to take a swing on the Fairest, and only lands square at his fist. The blow's enough to knock the thing's head back, and send it falling to the ground.

After missing the thing the first time, Byron growls and hefts his axe up, snarling, "Oh no you don't," over the sound of Rail's buckshot, bringing the blade down hard on onf of the vedmak that are harrassing Beatrice, a satisfied grunt escaping him when it goes down.

"Fuck, wake up!" Veronica knows nothing about medical care. Absolutely nothing. So she tries patting Paige's cheek in a vain effort to startle the harpy awake. With a frustrated grunt, she gives up and settles for pulling her feathered friend off to the side and ideally out of the danger zone.

The shuddering of the path. The high climbing stone baricade. Rails turns on heel, Shotgun swinging downward and popping back up for a new target. Never swing wide. "I would NOT vote for you guys on Idol." BOOM! Chk-CHACK. He stalks forward, past Veronica and Paige as she pulls the harpy away from the DAAAANGER ZONE!

The chanting continues without a break or a single slip up. Another wall of rock is coming up, although much slower than the first time. However, it mellows out some or at least their mood does. The ground continues to shake, and the incapacitated Transformed simple begin to slide through the earth. However, their comes a commotion from inside the cave. Something shifting, moving as if stuck against the rocks and far too large to be in there.

Beau just stares as the enemy in front of him just kind of.. injures himself on the metal spikes protruding from the draconic. With a growl he turns on his feet and bumrushes the next of the crazed sorcerers. Sure it's already full of buckshot, but that doesn't stop Beau from charging at it and raking his claws along exposed flesh. That's why you leave the robes on.

A sharp whistle from Beatrice to gather attention from friend and foe alike as she steps across the enemy she just defeated. She points to the broken pillar, then she points to the nearest not-yet-broken pillar while raising an eyebrow at the chanters. "They do not like their stones to be touched!" She points at the chanters, the same hand then very pointedly drawing thumb and forefinger across her lips in a hushing gesture while she flicks outwards at the end towards the afore-mentioned pillar with an unhappy look. Giving a half second for response, she raises her hands and her voice. "You vant more stones broken?!" She again gestures to the chanters, this time drawing the silencing thumb and forefinger across the space before her mouth in a violent jerk. Like you might use to snap a neck. It doesn't seem very effective.

Only of the newly transformed doesn't even get a full moment to remove his robes when he's attacked. First a load of buckshot into his front, and even worse he gets his chest damn near caved in by Beau. It roars at him, and tries to return the favor. However, it only serves to tear it's knuckles up and bleed on the Draconic as he gets hit by one more blow for good measure.

With the charging of a clawed tornado, Rails follows closely behind like one would follow a riot wall. Stick close. Stay behind the wall. Then pop out and choose your spot. "Why not? We already tossed one over the edge? What else could possibly go wrong?" His back thumps against the rock face as he lifts the shotgun high and pumps a round at an angle over Beau's shoulder. "Fuck those rocks! Get 'em, girl!"

Something Beatrice says draws the gargoyle's attention away from finding something else to cleave in two, and he glares at one of the remaining pillars and drops his axe, big stone hands flexing as he growls loudly, channeling his connection to the Wyrd into his own Strength.

Zeroing in on one of the still-standing pillars, Veronica vaults herself toward one with a high kick, and swings afterward with a thump of sparking knuckles against the hard surface. The stone crumbles, and she smiles in far too smug a fashion. "Eat rock, jerks."

Okay, so maybe Beau is a little more than frustrated. He stalks up to one of the pillars, visibly fuming. "I'm sick of this god damn chanting, these god damn rocks, and this god damn cliff." Well, this just proves that Beau has more emotional depth than he lets on, too bad most of what he's letting out right now is annoyance and anger. He just starts kicking one of the pillars as if doing so would reveal all the answers of the universe to him.

Byron takes the step or two forward to lay his big mitts on the pillar Beau beat on and roars loudly. putting his back into trying to rip the thing out of the ground, while glaring at the chanters that he can still see. Yes, this will be you. Well, that's what he's TRYING to say. There's a loud SNAP of stone breaking as he finally manages to snap the rest of the damaged pillar off, bringing it over his head to smash onto the ground at his feet.

The chanting grows ever louder as the wall nears its completion, and leaves nothing more than the roof as a true exit. However, aas two stones crumble their chanting only grows louder, and they can actually see something in the cave. Those that were in the caves might have seen it, or at least part of it. From what they can make out those veins carved into the stone weren't markings as they are outside, but the limbs of some many-legged stone creature.

Throttling inanimate objects is hard work. With one left to dust in her wake, Veronica moves on to the final stone still standing. With a scowl, she goes at it, sparks flying as her skin makes contact. "Just. Fucking. Break!" she mutters. "I need a drink!" It's a good thing the toes of her boots are reinforced, because she's finally left kicking it until it's juuuuust about ready to collapse.

As the three focus on the stones, Rails is left with... well, everything outside that may want to murder them. His attention, however, is stuck on those chanters as they grow louder. "Guys? More rocky breaky! Chop-chop!" BOOM! The shotgun goes off, loud and proud. Ripping into more targets as he backs toward the cave. "We were promised free drinks!"

"I will throw you off that cliff." Maybe that was meant for Rails, maybe that was meant for the chanters, maybe it was meant for the stone. Either way, Beau shouts it before planting his shoulder against the final stone and heaving in tandem with Byron's own efforts.

With only one pillar left, and Veronica already beating on it, Byron joins Beau on laying his hands on the last pillar and throwing his weight into it, the two together pushing the thing over to smash into pieces with a loud, frustrated growl.

Rails' insistence on haste appears to be justified as that thing is nearing its exit and more of the transformed only grow in number. The song may slow as the performers lose more of their number, the song appears ceaseless. However, this comes to an abrupt end when the last of the standing stones is broken apart. As quickly as they arrived, the hobs have all darted for the cave and short of a complete collapse won't be coming back any time soon. This does leave the group with two stone walls blocking their path, and several bits of large rock upon the ground.

"Cleanup on aisle seven," Veronica grumbles, pausing to catch her breath with eyes narrowing on their escape routes. "We'll get those drinks, come hell or-- just come hell." She dusts her hands off after Beau and Byron finish off the last stone, knuckles bruised and bloodied, but otherwise the sparky larcenist looks no worse for wear. "Nice pummeling," she tells the two. "Real unpleasant jerks," she adds, watching as the hobs hastily retreat. Crouching, she reaches for bits of the walls. Waste not, want not.

Byron glares around as if making sure the vedmak have gone, only then relenting his stance a little, "Whoever has the hedgefruit, see if you can crush one in Paige's mouth, or if someone can heal, lets get her on her feet." Pocket Ogre might be Pocket Ogre, but Byron will still feel better when she's ambulatory, "Considering what just happened, I don't know if this is going to work as a new site or not, but lets clean up. We may need to come back out and take a longer look."

Beau sighs heavily as the last stone falls and the chanting finally stops. "Thank god, that was giving me a headache." He takes a moment to examine his surroundings, walking what space they have between the walls and the cliff, before finally crouching down to examine one of the hobs and their discarded robes. "Leather." He offers up. "Might make some decent stuff if we can get someone to work it."
