Byron comes to chat about the Harvestmen

Location

Cyclone back room

Its been a while since the gargoyle has gotten his big stone ass back here before, so when he nudges his way into the back room, he has a couple of freshly-opened bottles of beer in one hand, looking for the proprietor, "Paige?" Hey, SOMEONE said she'd be back here, so that means he's looking for a table to park himself and wait, if he has to.

Paige is just coming down the stairs from her loft when she hears her name. She's in jeans and a tee-shirt, and has a spiral notebook in one hand. "Hey Byron," she says, smiling and heading over to the couch. "What's going on?" she asks, flopping down and putting her feet up. Ahh, comfort.

Byron perks up when Paige appears, sliding one of the bottles across the table to where she might be able to grab it before she sits down, "Hey Paige. Been sorting through things and figured I might find you here. Talked to a few folks and they said you had been taking care of the new fish for the Harvestmen pretty well?"

Paige reaches over to take the bottle, sipping from it. "I haven't really managed to do anything with /training/ any of the recruits," she admits. "But I try to help people out when and where I can. Went on a scouting mission with Inkblot once, and it went well. And yesterday he and I did an errand for a very hedge-shy custodian." She smiles. "I consider it my job to take care of people though. Why do you ask?"

Byron nods slowly, settling in a little and upending his own bottle for a moment to suck down a good portion, before setting it down, considering the space somewhere a few feet in front of him. Licking his lips for a moment, he offers, "Well, I think we've lost Jonah. The Pantheon is not always the most stable sometimes, but doesn't matter. Any of the recruits you think SHOULDN'T be full members by now?"

Paige's brow furrows in concern. "That's too bad. I know I haven't seen him in a while, but I didn't think he was gone." She sighs softly. "Offhand, no, I can't think of any recruits that I don't think are capable as far as I know. I've seen Eden and Inkblot in the Hedge firsthand and they did very well. I think that the recruits deserve it, actually."

Byron mmms and fingers the tip of his bottle and nods, "He could show up tomorrow and just say 'sorry guys, passed out for a week' and everything's fine, but for right now I guess we're going to assume he's not going to be back anytime soon. So in that case..." he trails off and takes another drink, letting it settle before he offers, "Well, in that case, maybe they don't need to be recruits anymore. And assuming Beau and Thorn don't flake on me, we're going to need a new Lieutenant, though I think Jonah's idea of 'squads' isnt really going to work very well...but in the meantime, you mind breaking the news to them that they've served their time, so to speak?" He pauses, "And as for you, how do you feel about serving as a Lieutenant?"

"Well the squads..." Paige trails off at that last question and she blinks at him before her lips slowly curve into a smile. "Lieutenant? Really? I feel very warm and fuzzy about it! I get my own squad!" She sets the beer and notebook down before she hops up to her feet and does a no doubt entertaining little boogy. "I think the squads are fine, just maybe not so specialized," she tells him while shaking her tail feathers and grinning. "And I'm happy to break the news to the recruits!"

Byron nods slowly, "I think we should also people get branded by what they are good at, like maybe a primary speciality and a secondary one. Then when we need to accomplish something, if not everyone on a squad is available, we know who is best to take out of who is available. You know? Sound like it will work?"

Paige finally sits back down and picks up the beer, still grinning. "That's not a bad idea. Like I'm best at recon, but damn good in a fight, too, that sorta thing? I can talk to the recruits when I give them the good news, get what they're best at. I know some of them, but not all."

Byron nods slowly, "Now, we have a few people that want to join that we should probably bring in as Recruits for a short period of time, until we're sure they are going to stick with it, and so we're sure they aren't going to go buck ass fucking nuts out in the Hedge. I love volunteers, but some people just are not cut out for being a PROTECTOR in the Hedge.

"Oh definitely. Don't think there's a way around it, really. The starting as recruits thing, I mean," Paige says, nodding. "And should get the lieutenants to take all the recruits out at least once, if possible. So we can figure out who they work best with and whose squad they should go on. And try to spread the talents around so each squad's complete."

Byron nods slowly, "So first...g'head and let the recruits know. And we'll see about sending folks out again to search the last few local places we might find a good Hollow for the group. Havent had a whole lot of luck in that area, so maybe this'll be a good break."

"I've been out a couple times on my own. Can't say I found anything promising, though. Did find a group of hobs I made friends with, though," Paige says with a smile. "Won 'em over with a roll of duct tape, if you can believe it. But yeah, we'll find someplace tha tworks for us."

Byron smirks and nods, "I havent seen the ones I heard about with the snowhoarders, but if those come up, yeah, just be careful." He trails off again to upend his beer and drain the rest of it, stifling a soft belch from scarfing it too fast, "Mmm. Classy." Considering for another moment, he finally refocuses on her, "Anything I ought to know about before I get back to working on sorting the rest of this mess out, you think?"

Paige cocks her head, considering for a moment. "Nothing really springs to mind. The serial killer was killed. We haven't found a hollow yet. So think that's it. But do wanna get your number before you go. Just in case I need to get a hold of you if I /do/ learn something you need to know about."

Byron grunts softly, "I coulda sworn you already had it, but here..." He leans over to tug out his cellphone and slides it across the table to her, "Text yourself with my phone then we both have each other's numbers." Yes, the gargoyle takes the lazy way out...

"I might," Paige says, looking sheepish. "Sometimes my memory isn't that great," she tells him as she grabs his phone and slowly, carefully, inputs her number and sends a text. When her phone goes off she offers the phone back to him. "This is so great, though. Thank you, Byron," she says, beaming at him.

Byron chuckles softly as he scoops his phone back up, and winks at her as he rises slowly to his feet, "In a month, you may not be thanking me, but I'm happy to see what you do with it. You've stuck with it and I for damned sure want to encourage that." He straightens up and sighs, "Okay, I gotta head back. Call me if something explodes?"

Paige grins. "I keep pretty chipper," she says with a shrug. "I'll call you, yeah, but hopefully nothing explodes that we don't want exploding. Take care, Byron."
