History & Theme

No one knows exactly when the first Warlock of the Praxic Order came about. Rumors persist that it was somewhere in Jerusalem during the second crusade. Others believe the order to be from the Freehold of Camelot in medieval England. The favored myth in Zhuzhou speaks of an angered lieutenant seeking vengeance against a rival, warring nation. Regardless of the truth, one fact is a given: Changelings that seek greater power swear themselves to an Aspect of the world and the Wyrd.

Whatever its origin, the Order's message has spread far and wide. There is power to be gained from service. Whether for survival, personal gain, or academic curiosity, the numbers of The Praxic Order tended to wax and wane with the state of occult study in a given area. As all things do, this has changed over time. The spread of information and knowledge has been a boon to the various Knights-Magus and Enchanters of the world. Rumors have spread, too, of their power's potential source... In places where fear of the Fae is high, warlocks and witches go to ground, and keep their ties to the Aspects secret, for none can say with specificity where their strength comes from beyond faith in and service to the unknown.

The Aspects associated with the Order are not the simple aspects of the world that most Changelings swear to. They are something greater, be they Gods, spirits, or even Fae that have attained some power beyond the known. No one can be sure. What is known is that once sworn to one of these greater, paracausal forces, a witch's connection to that part of the Wyrd and the world speaks to them in some way. They see signs and symbols that others may miss, and through this, find their ability to use the powers of their Aspect improved. Leaving the Praxic Order severs their ties with these Aspects, and with all blessings gained through them.

Joining

Joining typically takes anywhere from a few weeks to several months. A would-be apprentice presents themselves to an existing member with the intent to join, and their studies begin. Their teaching is tied to Clauses and the ephemeral, ontological forces of the worlds. This involves the study of whatever force they choose to connect with, and everything involved in its being. Additionally, they receive knowledge of the Occult unless they are already sufficiently versed in matters of the strange. Study in the Catches of Contracts is of the highest importance, as they are how reverence and chiminage is paid for the power Changelings gain. A warlock's actions and words when using these catches usually come with some measure of pomp or symbolism.

After however long it takes for them to form, solidify, and enforce their connection to their chosen Aspect, the apprentice becomes a full member. This all culminates in a ceremony steeped in symbolism, involving any Warlocks in a given region. It's considered rare that a teacher and apprentice swear themselves to the same Aspect, but it's not unheard of.

Appearance & Mien Changes

The biggest change to a Warlock is to his soul, and what are the eyes if not the windows to the soul. Their eyes take on a faint, burning glow symbolic of the Aspect they serve. Intricate markings also take shape around the eyes. As they grow in power these markings appear on differing parts of the body; they grow, shift, and change as if reaching to connect to each other.

Background

The vast majority of Warlocks come from a philosophical, academic, or studious background. Whether they were professionally educated or not is superfluous, although teachers and professors (both former and present) make up the majority of their numbers. The most common factors are two-fold: a want for greater power and a need for a connection to something greater than themselves.

Organization

The Praxic Order organizes itself by only two labels within the Entitlement: Magus/Enchanter and Apprentice. A Magus or Enchanter determines when an apprentice's study is done, and they're ready to be raised up to become a Magus or Enchanter. Magi within the order occasionally meet when they share an Aspect, but the Order is diverse, and it is rare to find more than one sworn to the same Aspect within the same city.

Privileges

Evocation of the Ties That Bind
A Warlock swears their self to a given aspect, and in turn gains additional power at the cost of additional effort. In order to receive the +3 bonuses below, they must both pay the Glamour cost AND perform the catch for the clause they use.

  • Their Aspect's Contract is considered affinity if it was not already.
(NOT retroactive. Any non-affinity XP already paid is not refunded.)
  • They gain +3 to their Aspect's associated Contract rolls (or a +1 to the clause's effect if there is no roll).
  • They gain +3 to their Aspect's associated Skill.

If a Changeling leaves the Order, they immediately lose all of the above privileges, as well as all dots in the associated Contract. Any XP spent to purchase the Contract is refunded. CG dots are not.

Using or rebuying the Contract isn't impossible, but the Changeling's relationship with it is twisted beyond repair, and using their former Aspect's associated Contract has its benefits reversed (work out details with your ST for the best choice in the context of the scene) unless the Changeling uses the clause's catch to prevent the warping of its power.

Additionally, using the catches for the clauses of that specific Contract no longer allows the Changeling to avoid Glamour costs. They must pay full price at all times.
