Would You Like Gun?

"Why was I here?"

Participants

Ashe, Byron, Candice

2017.08.26

Two Autumns are out for some shooting practice when Candice wanders in.

Location

On Target Firearms

Maybe Ashe is going crazy, but her suggestion of a Saturday night outing was a trip to the Shooting Range after dinner. The Shadowsoul has her own rifle with her, which amuses some of the men to no end. She wasn't giving anyone any scary looks though. She looked happy to be stopping in. "Would you like a pistol or a rifle?" she asks Byron as she settles at the two booths at the end of the row. More privacy.

Byron might be initially surprised at Ashe toting out a rifle, murmuring something about envisioning her sneaking in close with a silenced handgun then flitting away before anyone knew what happened. When confronted with a choice, however, he eyes the little handguns and murmurs, "Well, maybe a rifle is better..."

Why is Candice in a shooting range? She doesn't seem to have a gun on her, and she can't help but flinch at exceptionally long BANGs! coming from the range itself-- though perhaps it's because she's just walked in, and isn't used to it yet. Dressed in a modest cream blouse with a seafoam skirt, the delicate flowering makes her way down the bays, peeking through every aisle, half-nervous, half-intrigued-- and a bit startled when she comes across other Lost. "Oh! Hello." She says, offering a yellow-lipped smile.

Ashe takes a moment to settle the rifle case down on the counter of the stall she's standing in front of. The Shadowsoul unlocks the case and flips the lid open, gazing lovingly down at the rifle inside, "I've neglected my baby..." she murmurs softly. Then she looks up to the giant beside her and smiles, "Rifle might be better for you." she nods to that. Then her head whips around when she hears someone talking to them. There's a smile that pulls the stitches in her cheeks as the shadows clear a bit, "Good evening. How're you?" she asks.

Byron chuckles at Ashe's baby comment, and keeps his voice down, "Its been a while since I picked up one of these, maybe I ought to follow your lead for a bit." His attention shifts when Candace offers greetings, and a faint smile is returned, along with a slight, slow bow from the gargoyle, "Hello there. Did you also come to learn how to hit the broad side of a barn?"

Candice continues to smile, shaking her head a bit-- then pausing and saying, "No, I was looking for someone who recommended I learn how, so I thought to look here." Her smile turns wry, as she glances at the weapons in their hand, "I've always been a bit nervous about guns. They're so loud, and I've fired a rifle once and bruised my entire shoulder. But I bruise easily." Shaking her head a bit, she steps closer, peeking with curiosity and no shame over towards the little paper man, seeing if they've made any shots and how well, yet. "I'm Candice, Candice Ellison. I've arrived less than a month ago."

Ashe laughs at Byron's comment, "Hey, you were close." she tells him. She then focuses on Candice, "It's nice to meet you, Candice." she tells her. The targets are fresh, so no shots yet. "You'd probably be better off with a light pistol. Something small. If you get in close you can do a lot of damage with one." she explains. "And welcome to town. Have you had a chance to meet with any other locals?" she asks her.

"I'm Ashe Whelan by the way, I get sidetracked by gun talk." The redhead offers with a chuckle.

Byron rumbles softly, "Hello Miss Ellison. Byron.." indicating with a nod of his head, "I can usually be found shadowing this one. If you have any trouble finding your way around, let us know. Not promising we know everything, but perhaps we at least know what NOT to do." With that, he actually smiles and sidesteps to place the butt of the rifle down on the firing station's countertop, giving it a curious look.

"How lovely to meet you both." Candice says, looking away from the target towards Byron and Ashe. "I think the purpose is actually keeping me as far as possible from danger. I really do prefer running, if I'm being pursued." No shame or sheepishness, a straightforward confession. Except she does sound sheepish as she admits, "...I'm not very good at running long distances, or very quickly, however. Count calls me Ms. Glass." A wry shake of her head and smile, before she adds, "Count I've met. Him, Cian, and Lulu. We got along well enough and since I was staying a time, they're my motley. But I've also met CB-- do you know him? He's quite a gentleman," Sure, the molotov-throwing acerbic writer is, "And um, there was Uschi of the Hedgeways, and a charming Fair...Liam? I was staying at the Wayhouse for a time. Teagan is also new so she's not local. Um." Candice pauses, trying to think of other names.

Ashe looks to her and there's a nod, "Nothing wrong with running if it means you live." she tells her. She listens to her though and gives a nod at one of the names, "Lulu used to be a member of my group, but she parted way to go to another." she states about Court changes. "Which is fine, we grow." she admits. "I know of Uschi, but the others I've not met personally." she tells them. Then there's a look to the floor and the stalls, "What were you looking for?" she asks with a curious quirk of her eyebrow.

Byron glances back and holds up a finger, "Uschi. I've met Uschi-Booshi. Understanding her, I have not gotten to yet, but MET her, yes." Apparently the gargoyle is not QUITE the social monster. To Ashe's question though, he nods his head and quirks a brow at Candace, "Was there something you needed help with? If that freehold is harrassing you, I don't mind quietly thumping a couple of heads..." The rifle is held onto, but curiousity is splitting the big guy's attention at the moment.

Candice laughs, "Oh no! No one is harassing me. Everyone's been quite lovely-- it's one of the reasons I've decided to stay around people and not the woods." She explains, moving as she talks to look over the container with the weapons, as well as looking over the weapons in their hands. Personal space? Distance? Those are for other people to bother with. "Lulu is a dear. And Uschi seems like a wonderful person to know, though I doubt I'll understand her. I have trouble enough with most people." She turns back to Ashe, however, puzzled, "Looking for? I'm not looking for anything, I don't-- OH! I was, wasn't I? The person who recommended I hold a gun. I don't know their names." Cheerfully admitted.

Ashe gives a look to Candice and she nods, "I can probably help you with guns and things. Given you bruise easily the kick back on a rifle is a no go, not to mention that a broken shoulder is not fun. We could probably go back out to the sales floor or I can let you shoot the one pistol I brought." she tells her with a smile. Then there's a look to Byron and a smile, "Probably need to keep that to safer spaces." she tells him quietly.

Byron murmurs softly, "Right. Right. Guess I havent wandered outside in a while. I'm forgetting how to behave." He smiles a little at that and winks at Ashe, before offering to Candace, "It just takes a little getting used to." Of course, the man made out of STONE isn't going to complain about bruised shoulders. Hel-LO?? He takes a moment longer to check over the rifle he's 'renting' then looks back at Ashe and Candace curiously, "Ashe is very good, she might find something you really like."

"Oh! But you two came to have fun yourselves, didn't you?" Candice says, looking from Ashe to Byron, concerned. "I don't want to intrude. Though if it wouldn't bore you, I would like to at least try, I suppose." A grin, quick and bright, before she looks curiously at Byron, "You've been behaving fine, I think. But I'd really rather not get any more used to bruising than I already am." She says with a shrug, before looking back at Ashe, expectant.

"I know, we'll get out more though." she tells him. "Byron has to deal with my love of firearms, so it's true." the Shadowsoul muses. "And it's fun helping people as well, so that's no problem really." Ashe states with a chuckle. "So rifles are out." she nods to that. Then she reaches inside of the jacket she's wearing and unholsters the gun she has there, "This is a Smith and Wesson Model 351C .22 Magnum. It's small, light and it's a good defensive gun." she tells her as she keeps the gun pointed down. Gun safety is serious.

Byron apparently fishes checking over his rifle as he lays it down in the shooter's alcove then turns his attention completely on Ashe and Candace, folding his arms across his chest while he leans a shoulder into the dividing wall between his and Ashe's space. He only nods in agreement with Ashe's comment about helping being fun, adding, "Though I think she'll be all the help here. Im doing good to remember to load the thing before firing it." When Ashe goes into more detail about the gun, he DOES loom in a little further to get a better look at it. It's like Adult Show And Tell. Minus the obligatory sex stuff.

Proving that she is entirely a novice at gun safety, Candice reaches for the gun with one hand-- heck, not even both hands, but her pointer and thumb finger, trying to raise it enough to get a closer look by putting it at eye level. Hopefully Ashe has more sense than Candice does. "It is very small! I thought they were supposed to have longer barrels. This one looks stubby. It's very cute." She mentions, before looking at Byron, "Oh, you still know more than me! Are you two married?" Outta nowhere.

Ashe gives a look to the big gargoyle and there's a smile, "You do just fine." she tells him. Then she turns her attention back to Candice and she shakes her head, "It's loaded, so never point it at yourself." she tells her. "Here, the safety is on. What you want to do is take it, hand around the grip and pointed down, don't pull the trigger." she tells her. "It's a snubbed nose, yes." she nods to that. "They can make them in other colors as well." she mentions. Then Ashe gives a smile to Byron and the out of the blue question, "We're engaged, getting married soon." she tells Candice. "It's not a big thing that we've been announcing." she adds.

Byron flashes a brighter smile when Ashe talks about them being engaged, and nods slowly along with her words, "We cant precisely elope without someone wondering if we're really just keeping to ourselves, or if something has happened to us, so we're just being...low key. That's what Im looking for." He takes a step forward and kneels down so he isnt really looming over either woman any longer. Nodding at the gun Candace is holding, "They at least make them simple enough that it's hard to screw up."

"Oh, I was close." Candice says, looking inordinately pleased with herself. The smugness turns into a frown as she tries to hold it the way Ashe is, rather awkwardly at that, "Oh, this doesn't heat up, does it? I've seen the guns in the movies with all the smoke coming out of them. I'm not as bad with heat as I am with bruises, but I do need to be well-hydrated." Of course the flower child does. "And I think it would be quite romantic if you eloped. You don't have to go anywhere serious, just hop away for a weekend and come back married, don't tell anyone, then a week later simply tell everyone you're taking a honeymoon. It's best to leave before they have a chance to ask questions. They can take the time you're away to process and consider everything."

"It's more I run to many things in the community to just disappear and not announce it. So we're being low key." Ashe muses as she shakes her head. "And nah, this sort of gun isn't like the huge chain guns and things of that nature." she tells her. Ashe seems perfectly content to stand there and explain guns. "Usual don't grab them by the barrel unless you're going to pistol whip someone." she muses. "And we'll get married. It's a bit of normalcy and consistency in an otherwise hectic life." she admits. "And you said you've got a little group? That's a good thing. More protection. It's never a bad thing." she tells her.

Byron rumbles softly in amusement, and merely offers to Ashe's words, giving Candace a wink, "Well, considering who we are, any wedding with us in it will probably spook most people away from it. Its not a good wedding if a small child isn't in tears from being so afraid." Offering a small sagelike nod of his head as if he was pronouncing some known fact of life, "And yes, a group is good. Someone who will Notice if something happens to you or something goes wrong."

"Ah. SO you're important, I suppose." Candice says, quite frank and blithe. Filters? Inner thoughts? Feh. "I suppose as dedicated as at least one of you is, it's to be expected." Her attention is mostly on the gun, poking and fiddling with little bits-- but at least she's sensible enough not to touch the trigger. After all, at least one of them has a mantle which blights out her own by a sizeable amount. "I can't say I'm a fan of scared children. It makes me anxious and fretful, when other people are so afraid." This time, there's an apologetic smile to them both: she knows their Court, after all, but she feels as she feels! "Yes, I don't know any of them all that well, but they were very nice and I felt comfortable with them, so I decided it seemed reasonable."

Ashe gives a look to Byron, "What are you going to do if we ever adopt?" she chuckles as she shakes her head. "Scared children aren't really my thing, scaring teens and young adults getting themselves into stupid situations? That's my thing." she admits. "I wouldn't say I'm that important. I run a few groups and I like to make sure that things are smooth sailing." she states. "Crying babies are the worst on the nerves." she muses. Then there's a look to her, "Sometimes are instincts lead us the right way. So I don't blame you on that. Are you a member of the bigger local group?" she asks.

"Yes, I am." Candice says with just a touch of smugness. She's pleased with herself! "I knew I would be, but it's always nice to confirm. My parents were against me taking a roadtrip to find myself in the first place." Parents? While that wrinkle-less flowerface makes it hard to guess her age, she certainly is at least twenty. "No, I'm not. I considered it, but I've no intention of joining a freehold since I don't know how long I'll be here. And I'm not terribly interested in things like freeholds. I've dealt with them, of course, and I'm friendly with the two near me, but." A mild shrug, before she grins again, "I don't like when anyone's afraid and worried. Child to adult. It always makes me want to help them remain calm. It makes -me- worried and a bit afraid, because scared people are dangerous."

Ashe gives Byron an amused look and there's a chuckle, "I was teasing you, darling." she tells him. She then turns her attention back to Candice and she nods, "Trust is something that is definitely earned these days." she admits. Then she listens to the woman and there's a nod, "You have your own reasons for not joining, that's understandable." she tells her honestly. "And we don't cut others off just because they aren't part of the bigger group. So if you should need something, we'll give you our contact information." she offers. Then she gives a nod to that, "You're very right and we had that situation where a very scared person that was attempting to rob a place shot a friend. So there needs to be tempering of how far you go." she admits to that.

Byron rumbles a little at the last, reaching out to give Ashe's back a light, momentary scritch. He starts to say more to Candace when she talks about not liking people being afraid, but reconsiders before the first word hits his vocal chords, and closes his mouth. Instead he nods once at Ashe and adds, "As long as we are all talking to each other, then at least when we have these problems, we can take care of them quietly without causing a fuss."

"YOu two are part of a freehold, then?" Candice asks, glancing at them both. "I forget the name of the local one-- Liam, Lionel, whatever his name is was the only one I've met who I know for certain is so. And perhaps Hazel." Another shrug, as she watches them both, curiously, before smiling warmly at Ashe, "Oh, of course! Thank you for that. I was meaning to ask someone in the freehold about the woods and forests, and if there was any area I should ask about before settling or foraging in. I'm not particularly sturdy, but," She shrugs, saying frankly, "I'm half plant, I need to be out in soil and sun sometimes. The woods belong to no one, but sometimes the human half of someone causes issues." A mild grimace, "Still, that comes up so rarely." She reasons, "But it's always best to double check."

Ashe gives a smile to Byron and then nods to him, "That's right." she tells him. Then she looks back to Candice when she asks the question on the Freehold, "Yes. We both are." she tells her. If the others are, she doesn't volunteer the information, because that's their business. Then there's a smile, "As far as the forest and things go, I don't think there's any groups that hold claim. We have a place out there but it's open to non members as well." she tells her. "I think as long as people don't cause issues, don't bring us to the attention of the media and things it's fine." she adds. "I could ask Helah if she has anything to say on it as well." she offers. She gives an understanding look, "I completely understand that. When I moved her from Boston a long time ago I was unsure of how I'd integrate with the locals, but it's been alright." she chuckles.

"Oh, there's a local urban legend about the East Bank being a bad thing. Lots of disappearances and things of that nature. So best to go with someone if you need to." Ashe adds after a moment.

Byron phsts softly when Ashe tries to include him in the 'famous' group, "I'm no body. I USED to be someone, but now I'm a glorified forest ranger." He winks at Candace at that, then adds, "Or you know, when you need a knee broken to get somoene off your back. Favors, really." Another sagenod is given to that, leaning in a little closer to the shadowmonster.

"Who is Helah?" Candice asks, adding, "I don't really like attention in the forest. I only mean to go up to the mountains to paint and spend some time." She looks towards Byron, smiling, "Do you know the loveliest spots? I might trouble you for a tour one of these days. I can do pretty well for myself in quiet woods, but only if I'm not bothered. And the woods are always a bit dangerous." Ashe is given a curious look, then Byron, then Ashe again, "Is it a real urban legend, a natural thing, or something that simply outsiders shouldn't go into?" She asks after a moment, flat-out asking if it's a cultivated legend or not.

"She's our Queen." Ashe mentions quietly. She didn't like talking about Freehold stuff, but they were in a corner and the gun fire was enough to cover things. And she wasn't giving secret codes away! "There are some lovely spots out there." she nods to that. When she is given the curious look from Candice there's a serious look, "It's one of the legends that I'd pay attention to. People go missing, bad things happen all the time. So it's got backing." she admits. "And I don't say that to scare you, I say it to educate you since you're new to town." she adds. "If you'd like to talk more on things I'm sure we could meet you at the Wayhouse sometime and talk more on it." she offers to her. "Tomorrow we've got the Sunday delivery to worry about, so early morning for both of us." she frowns softly.

Byron rumbles softly in agreement with Ashe's warnings, "Its a good idea to not be out alone and after dark until you get comfortable around here, unless of course, you're one of the ones up to no good at that hour." When Ashe talks about an early morning, he grunts softly, "And then she has to go be responsible like that." With a low chuckle, he slowly rises back to his feet and rolls his shoulders in a stretch and wait for her to head off, "I hope we can run into you again soon...I'm sure there are still plenty of things to talk about."

Candice nods, "I should be on my way too, I suppose." She says, offering the small pistol back to Ashe. "Thank you for showing me.I don't know how I feel about learning and buying and carrying one myself. But I suppose I should learn a bit. I suppose we could meet up another day and you can teach me more." A smile, before she looks around, faintly puzzled. "I wonder why I came here again." She muses before shrugging lightly. Apparently not even caring.

It is slightly possible she might be a bit ditzy. Slightly. "Goodbye Byron, Ashe!"
