Two Harvestmen and a Greenie go looking for trouble and they find it, and someone else finding it. Part of Broken Dolls.

"So I was looking for a few glamour fruits, just to keep on hand, because it's not always convenient to go find some scared chap or a hopeful little girl when you need a lift," rambles Vorpal as he trots along, leading the way. His shadows are even thicker than normal- he's almost completely obscured, between the ones he's armored himself with and the OTHER ones working to keep him hidden, "And I find. A fucking. Grove. Like a whole damn grove of the things. I got like. Three dozen before I started feeling guilty at taking so many and wandered off. And I was wondering if the- Greenies, whatever that means, Dielle mentioned them- could make use of some of the extras. Because I can totally give you like two dozen, no sweat." A small kitchen knife does tricks between his fingers, red racing car flames on the handle. Someone got their hands on a Guy Fieri brand kitchen knife.


Polk hadn't met Nemo before and when they meet up outside the hedge, Tony is pretty clearly not a full Lost. He actually looks like a pretty normal guy. His car isn't even new, it looks about five or six years old and could use a wash and wax. It seems Tony knows the value of blending in. But inside the hedge, he is soft and squishy and has no contracts so he does not mind bringing everything when they are looking for trouble. He's in a full plate carrier combat vest, green pants, black shirt, and the vest carries some grenades, extra magazines for his rifle and pistol, some zipcuffs, and it is -clearly- hedgespun - just like the automatic rifle held in gloved hands and the rapier worn on his left hip. The rifle hs a suppressor on it with the word 'Bushwhackers' written along the buttstock. He's also wearing what looks like a hockey helmet. Traipsing along with Vorpal, his eyes are open behind those sunglasses and he hasn't said much since getting into the cuds.


"Thanks. Appreciate the offer but hold on to them for now. I suggested the greenies might want them to her when she mentioned it to me. Can't complain about a big haul," the Fae-Touched says quietly.


Floof! Etsy flutters along with the group, translucent, like a half-realized person made of smoke. Trotting at her heels is a corgi-sized silver-blue otter hedgebeast, and slung across her back -- also translucent at the moment -- is a large map case. The Greenie drifts along in Nemo's wake, a pretty bit of detritus with ribbons in her flowery hair. "Am not to be carryings, already is a pockets full. Greenies do a grow of Blushberries, literally do having so many more than can all carries. Keep for givings to peoples who do not haves," Etsy opines, drifting back and forth in the sort of mild zig-zag pattern that probably would have saved Rickon Stark's life. Or possibly she's just floating on some internal tide that only she can feel.


"HaHA! Fine, then! More for me for now, and for others later on!" Vorpal is very careful not to hop, lest his Contracts bear him further ahead than he intends and leave Polk in the dust. He's doing his best to keep his eyes out, watching those queer patterns that only the Lost Gods can truly read properly for signs of trouble. "Now. You said your name was- Puck? No. It's close, but that's wrong. It's a president, though. Poooolllllka? POLK. Polk. Ha! Got it. Now, Polk. You seem a sharpshooter. Don't stick too close if we find trouble. Let me get in their face- I'll fall back and intercept if anything makes a break for you. And don't be afraid to shoot into the melee. You won't hit me. Promise I'll be fine." Another few gliding steps. "Say. Uh. Itsy? Are there any plants you and the gardening club could use cuttings of? Wouldn't mind fetching samples for you lot if there are."


Polk looks at the back of Nemo's head with a blank expression, then turns to walk backwards. He's tailgunner and watching their trail while they move. "Sounds like you really know your stuff, Mister Nemo." He's got a slow drawl, likely someplace in the south. No wonder he and Dielle get along.


"It is an ETSY," the mermaid reiterates, perhaps the tiniest bit crossly, but only the tiniest bit, because, what, she's going to be bothered by someone with speech or memory strangnesses? Only so much.

At her heels, the otter -- moving quite speedily to keep up with the bipeds -- flutters its feathery eyebrows and explains, "It's short for Esther, sort of. I told her she ought to just go back to Esther, since the ass who nicknamed her that isn't a thing, but the name has sort of stuck. Itsy is short for Itsuki."

"Where is going to have a lookings? Is the trods of loops they hacks intos I am reading a reports." Etsy floofs along next to Polk, chewing absently on her lower lip.


"Oh, it's just Vorpal. I use Nemo when I introduce myself to people I'd rather forget my name," quips the tremendously Wyrd shadowsoul. "And I like to think I know a thing or two about warfare. Or at least fights. Not quite the same thing, I'll allow."

"Etsy! My deepest apologies, do forgive me for the mistake. Knowing where it came from helps tremendously, thank you sir," he offers to the otter. "I ... -may-... slip and call you Esty, but I shall try very hard not to do so, Miss Etsy."

"Yes, the Looptrod sounds like the place to go. They've been burning their way into there, yes? Trying to torch a trod into the loop, are they?"


"You got it, Mister Vorpal." Polk doesn't play games with the names. Likely he gets it, but he certainly isn't questioning it out loud. "And no, they definitely are not the same thing." The guy turns back around and walks forward, keeping the rifle held casually across the front of the armor. He doesn't seem to have an opinion on where they are looking since Vorpal is leading the way. "Etsy, how's your fighting ability? Are you comfortable?" Tony's voice sounds like he's whispering.


"Hokays!" Etsy follows along, that beribboned piece of detritus floofing along behind him. "Yes, is an Etsys," she reiterates, just in case anyone missed that previously. These things are important. "Oh, I do not do a fights myselfs so muches, am a heals and a fights with a forests... " she explains, fluttering her webbed hands in the air as if the webbing somehow itself was a ribbon catching a breeze. (Highly unlikely.) "Is best to give to a healers a foods, did you knowings?" This might just be Etsy angling for food. Or it might not. You never can tell with Etsy. "Especially a bacons, is best heals if give healers a bacons... " Okay that's probably her angling for bacon.


"Hm? Oh. Well! Should I happen upon a bacon tree, I shall be sure to liberate you a rasher or two. As it is, all I have are berries. Which, of course, you're welcome to!" Vorpal keeps the lead, nearly dancing along at the head of the group as he wends their way towards the looptrod. "Are there any warning signs of these interlopers? Anything I'd best keep my ears out for, perhaps, you two?"


"Okay, that's good to know. Where do you like to be when fightin' starts? Do you like people protectin' you or are you okay on your own as long as we keep an eye out for you?" Polk glances over to Etsy with the offered questions. There's a smile at the point about bacon and he reaches into his vest and produces a Snickers. "Next time I'll bring you chocolate-covered bacon with pretzel salt. Its a delicacy here I come from." There's a wink to Etsy and he looks ahead to Vorpal, just lifting his voice only enough to be heard and not much further. "Glowing red eyes and a bad stench."

This is the point where Etsy gets -- a little bit creepy. The mermaid raises her eyebrow, and then she stretches out one of her webbed, translucent hands and sticks it right through Polk's shoulder. "Not even a ghosts can hits," she informs Polk gently. "Just do a watch out for a mrbls." She gestures with her hand toward the otter who's keeping pace with the group. "Mrbls will do a helpings when do have a needs," she explains, her slippered feet light on the Hedge earth.

"Um! I am not seeings before myselfs, but you said a burnings? Probably smells of a burnings to look for maybes?"

The trip through the Looptrod is uneventful for a while, and then Polk picks up on exactly that -- first, the scent of burning, like a woodstove in the distance. A rattle-clicking sound follows, like an engine that won't quite turn over.


Polk looks over at the hand as it goes through his shoulder and there's a small, very quiet laugh. "I always want to say that tickles when someone does something like that. I feel like it should. Point made, though." He nods to the rest of her request. "Watch for Mrbls. Yes, ma'am." But when the scent and sound catches him the guy slows to a stop. He looks the direction it seems to be coming from and clicks his teeth twice. When they look to him he taps his nose once, then his ear. The gloved hand then gently gestures in the direction he believe it to be coming from. There's no hasty movement, just the notification. Polk knows better than to go running off.


Vorpal pauses at the indication, glancing back towards the fae-touched with a queer, twisting that seems like it ought to throw him off balance. When Tony indicates what's caught his attention, Vorpal straightens and nods, spinning the innocuous kitchen knife in one hand as he wanders in that direction, letting the others keep a fair berth behind him as he starts to sneak in the direction indicated.


It's entirely possible that the events of last night (whoops, did no one put up a report about that yet? It was rather late when they got back) have agitated the Dolls. It's possible this is a coincidence, but --

Near the hob village that's not too far from the Freehold's hollow, that smell of fire intensifies, and as the village -- burned down and rebuilt already in the last few months -- comes into view, it is -- those poor hobs -- on fire again.

Most of the Hedge in this area of the trod is either on fire, has been on fire, was just put out, or has been mowed down. The Thorns encroach from either side, the hobs are fleeing, and ... it's overrun with these little things that look like artist's manikins, carrying weaponry, chasing down the native hobs.

Distantly, something like a wolf howls.

Nemo won't mind an otter climbing his leg to try to perch on his shoulder, right?

Polk creeps through the underbrush, avoiding the thorns carefully. When they spot the scenage and carnage of it all, the whole thing begins to sink in quickly. Its essentially a massacre. He's seen something like this before and something clicks over in his mind. He looks over to Etsy and Vorpal, "Contact front." Looking back forward, the sunglasses come off and he tucks them into the vest. Gloved hands bring the rifle up to his shoulder and he crouches to a knee the loudest sound from his rifle is the bolt clicking three times and the brass landing in the dirt. The rounds don't have that far to go and the Major probably never even knew they were under attack. The Head Honcho's head comes apart completely in a moment and then his whole being explodes. Polk nods in satisfaction, "Displacing," and he starts moving around to the right.


Apparently the noise and the racket draws some attention. From the base of the tallest tree not too terribly far from the rear of the village, a horse and rider appear. The tree simply disgorges them at a full gallop. Looking like some sick cross between a noire detective and a Spanish caballero from the golden age, the pair charge directly through the village, shouting a general alarm to the local hobs. "To arms, partisans! To arms!" He starts firing his bow well in advance of actually reaching their lines, firing streaks of lightning through the air to slam into the chests of a series of the soldier hobs. And then he just keeps on charging, right down their throats. Perhaps trying to stall the advance and buy the village time.

The trees -- burning as they are -- start to flex and stretch, the vines slithering across the ground toward the tanks. Etsy's fingers flare as if directing a current that only shee can feel, and the greenery responds to her. The siren sings to herself, rising and falling arpeggios, singing contentedly as if nothing at all is amiss in the world, crooning as the tanks turn their turrets toward Nemo, as two soldiers take slashes at the legs of Alonso's horse, as the cyberwolf's howl shakes the leaves and the villagers flee fire and fracas.


The slender trods which cut their way into the Looptrod rustle and shake: there's activity along them, to put it mildly. The sound of tank treads is distant, but the greenery parts, continuing to disgorge more -- and more -- and more.

Vorpal might not get to hear the gunfire Polk unleashes on the stand-out soldier in the group, but he certainly sees its impact. As the Fae-Touched dissolves the head of the Major, Vorpal begins to laugh. It's not a pleasant laugh, it really isn't- it's bordering on maniacal, and breaks only when he yells over his shoulder, "FRIEND! I think you and I will get along JUST. FINE." His stroll is taking him towards one of the tanks, the nearest one, but he stops dead in his tracks and grabs at his head for a moment, stumbling back a pace.

"Oooooooh. Someone... is fucking with- oh, whatEVER is THIS? THIS IS NEW!" As Vorpal stands and seems to rant at nothing, two of the soldiers rush him, intent on capitalizing on his distraction. That proves a fatal mistake, as the instant they commit to their blows, Vorpal -twists.- The movement is mindblowingly fluid, like bullet-time without the slow motion, and when he returns upright, the paired soldiers erupt in their putrid death-throes- while Vorpal calmly whips one hand to the side, slinging mess off the simple kitchen knife in his hand. The tanks open fire, and once more, Vorpal jerks within the cloying layers of shadow surrounding him, and the bolts of flame rush through, finding no purchase save among the local scenery.

"Now. For the tin..." But they aren't through with the infantry, it seems, as a halfdozen burst through the underbrush. "... THE MORE THE MERRIER, GENTLEMEN. Come! WE DANCE!"

Still moving at the edge of the village, the Fae-Touched is keeping to the branches, shrubs and trees. He's got no intention of exposing himself unnecessarily. Finding cover at a rock, he sets himself back a bit from it and watch, getting ready to line up a shot when he spots more incoming. Two wolves in the trees, seeing those eyes he lifts the rifle and the bolt clicks through rounds, stopping the wolves butt cold. Once done, he fires another couple rounds just for good measure and moves back south the the left, from the way they came.

Horse and rider veer suddenly to the left when the soldiers begin taking swings at the rather vulnerable legs of the fae mount. The rider shouts an order in what might be Spanish, or maybe Italian, or something very much like that. With that spoken, Alonso simply rolls backwards out of his saddle and off the hind end of his horse, skidding along the ground to a stop in a crouch. The horse keeps wheeling left, charging back towards the village. With the rattle of automatic fire whittling away at the trees and keeping the briarwolves in cover, Alonso draws first one arrow, then another, sending them arcing high into the sky, flickering white-blue light in their wake. They plunge back down behind the trees where two of the briarwolves have sought cover, slamming home with miraculous accuracy, right atop their noggins. Before either corpse can fall out of the trees to the ground, Alonso has blasted another soldier from its feet, causing it to burst like the proverbial zit against the base of one of those trees. "Wolves first, then the tank crews, comrades!"

As the marksman and the sniper rip the wolves in the trees to pieces, Vorpal spots the incoming footmen and brandishes what should be that embarassingly unintimidating kitchen knife as he darts into motion, leaving the charred craters of the tank's missed shots behind him as he rushes into the mob of the incoming tin commandos, ceasing his motion as he draws near the center of them all. "Come, gentlemen. My blade awaits you all. It would be rude to keep her waiting."

The branches and vines that started moving last turn start to wrap around one of the tanks, as Esther, vague and not truly present, continues to sing to herself as if nothing's wrong or nothing is happening. We're all fine here, we're fine, everyone's fine!

"REDIRECT!" comes from one of the Dolls. How do they speak, they have no mouths, that's super fucking creepy. He swings, but his sword is batted aside, and hits one of his own men -- "Softer targets, men! FOR MOTHER!"

The others, who do not -- apparently -- speak -- break away from Nemo, looking for softer targets indeed, and the tanks fire -- two at Nemo, one at Alonso -- as more of the Wolves come in.

Having already started moving back around left, the Fae-Touched moves swiftly through the undergrowth. He ends up sliding to a stop along a muddy section of path, coming up behind the tree he had hoped to. His rifle is brought up in a fast cirle, clearing the flanks of the Lost team, then coming back and finding another target in his sights. But just beyond that one, another has a star on his face. His thumb flicks the selector switch to a single round. Exhale, hold, squeeze. The bolt clacks from the suppressed rifle, just once, and the round goes downrange. It slaps the doll's head right off, punching through the middle of the star, and then the rest of him explodes. Done, Polk gets up and begins running again, still moving around left over by Etsy.

Having caught the orders from the Major, Alonso decides to stop being a softer target than the knife wielding maniac making mince of the soldiers that dare to get near. Lowering his bow for a moment, the archer twirls his cloak about himself, as though making some grand operatic exit. And then he makes a grand operatic exit. The cloak seems to evaporate into a gust of wind, taking the darkling along with it. Like a plume of smoke, he simple evaporates into the air, billows over the battlefield, and pours through one of the viewports of the tank at the rear of the advancing column. In an instant, the man reappears in the center of the small tank, surprising the crew inside. He makes short work of them with two quick bow shots, which causes the tank and turret to fall still. At least for the moment.

Cannonfire rips through the air where Vorpal used to be, where Vorpal is returning to his feet, as two soldiers fall, torn open by Vorpal's blade. His free hand rests on the wrist of one of the remaining two, whose hand has... driven his own weapon through his compatriot, less damaged than the others by Vorpal... but slain by his ally.

"Well DONE, friend, WELL DONE. Come. You and I, we have only begun our-" PAFF. The Major's face dissolves in a spray of pus and gore, leaving Vorpal blinking... and sighing sadly. "You know, he WAS starting to get INTERESTING!" More wolves bound into the clearing in the trees, two near Vorpal and his dance partner, the other isolated off to the east side of the clearing. Two soldiers? Two wolves? A tank? Those wolves are way up in the trees, and the soldiers have caught onto his tricks... wait. Was that the rattle of arrows and doom from -inside- a tank? And big old roots and stuff trying to eat the other one?? WELL! It's apparently time to break tanks now, and Vorpal isn't about to miss out.

The God of the Hunt lunges at the nearby tank as the two tin soldiers scamper for something easier to hit. The shadows sheathing him peel back from one hand to reveal the knife clutched in one razor-fingered hand,

Polk feels a fre impacts to the bodyarmor and he moves around a tree and when he comes around the other side to face his pursuers, he's no longer holding the rifle up. nope, he's drawn a gilded rapier from his left hip. The man probably looks ridiculous. He's dressed like a modern combat gunfighter, but expertly holding a blade and wearing a daring smile. Correction, The Beard is wearing a daring smile. His left hand gestures the dolls in as he steps to his own defense.


Alonso pushes the corpse of the gunner out of its seat, and hops right into it. He's familiar with the controls by now, and grabs the wheel and mans the pedals as though this were your run of the mill Toyota Camry. He wheels the turret a bit to the right and swings the barrel upwards towards the trees. And then, with a series of clunks and a crack of the ignition, a spray of liquid fire roils up into the canopy. Black smoke and waves of concussive heat cook through the tree tops as the turret begins to traverse to the left, showering the fire across the cover of three of the briarwolves. One singed corpse drops to the ground, still on fire, round about the time the fire ceases to pour out of the tank.

Polk manages to slice the hell out of one of the dolls that comes at him. It isn't just a slice, though. He cuts cross it and pops the thing like a mishapen zit. He's about to move o nthe other when the contract hits him and he falls over suddenly. Goddamnit. And then stabbed? Who stabs an unconcious man? C'mon. That's like kicking a weiner dog. That's just insensitive.

Etsy, being a little floof, floofed off to turn off the tank which she just remembered she can do. She isn't the best Escape Artist, is she? Actually she is but that's not the point. She's a bit of a floof sometimes. The tank just... stops, and she giggles absently in the middle of singing to herself.

The screeeeee, however, brings her back to herself. That, for the curious, is the scream of a MRBL. It stomps its little feet, standing behind Nemo, and screams, "YOU DUMB FUCKS! YOU LEFT THE SQUISHY ALONE! THEY HAVE THE SQUISHY! GET THE SQUISHY!"

The irony of a former member of the CNT-FAI using a tank to char broil the enemy is no doubt not lost on Alonso. But he makes the most of the situation, even so. He reverses the traverse of the turret with a loud clunk, kicks the fire into full effect, and once more sprays a rain of liquid heat up at the canopy. The shower of fire makes short work of whatever wasn't bured up on the first pass. Briarwolves included. The battlefield is now well lit, what with the burning tree tops and everything. Anyone bring marshmallows?

Vorpal whips into the cabin of the tank and lashes out, but the cramped quarters make it counterintuitively difficult to leverage his speed and agility to make the blow truly telling. As he rolls his eyes at his own momentary incompetence, the otter's shriek on his back draws his attention back into the open field, where- oh. Oh, fuck. He'd been holding his own! Something- Something happened to trip Polk up, it had to be. Now? Fucked up, in the arms of the last soldier, getting dragged towards a trod?

"NOT. TODAY." The two in the tank utterly without consequence in that instant, Vorpal explodes out of the tank in a violent whirl of shadows, feet only touching the ground once he's nearly halfway to the kidnapping tin soldiers. Darkness falls on them like a tide, and in an instant, the standing soldier flies out of the shadows in pieces, leaving the last soldier with an extremely angry God and a very heavy mortal.

Alonso's field of fire is clear of threats. Just the smoke and orange flickering light of the fires in the treetops overhead. He abandons his seat in the turret and turns the hatch wheel, shoving the hatch open so that he can pull himself up and out of the machine. Literally exhausted, he sits himself down on the top of the turret, sets his bow down beside himself, pulls out a cigarillo and his flask, and proceeds to light himself up a smoke. Flask in one hand, cigarillo dangling from the corner of his mouth, he removes his ridiculously overlarge hat and begins to fan his face with it as though overheated. He might well be. "Fucking imperialists."


It's only a heartbeat or two before the second soldier on the ground joins the first in a heap. Vorpal spends a brief moment making sure that Polk is stable- he is, thanks to someone's timely magimedical intervention- but there's still one more thing to handle. Or, more specifically, two more things in one opened tin can. Before they have time to bring the cannon round and fire, he's back in the hold, and- from the sound of things- it gets messy before it gets quiet again, and he has time to climb back out. His jaw is set, and there are two rather prominent gashes through the ratty old clothes he's wearing that he wasn't sporting when he went in, but he's on his feet and there's no more movement from inside that last tank. He drops to sit beside the currently unconscious Polk, and and takes a long, slow breath.

"Well! That was fun."

Polk gets all healed up and starts muttering under his breath as he hears Vorpal mention his enjoyment. The Fae-Touched slowly pushes himself up to his elbows and looks down at the blood on his clothes, and the opening on his chest. "That looks like it might've hurt." Hrmph. He then looks at the two bodies beside him and he sighs, getting up. Gloved hands dust himself off and he puts his sunglasses back on as he looks back at the burning ville. "What a waste. Why hit a village like this?" He looks over to see Alonso on the tank and seems satisfied that he's alright, then he's looking for Etsy. "Mrbl!" he calls out, looking to find out where the otter went to as he drops the mag out of the rifle and shoves a new one in there.


What a question it is, indeed: why hit a village like this? Etsy's vines and tiny little star flowers run across the ground from the translucent mermaid, slithering to the God and the Fae-Touched, slender tendrils stitching closed wounds and knitting up lacerations. That stab wound is closed before Polk even wakes, and then the mermaid floofs over lightly, followed by the mrbl. She slips into fully-solid, as the mrbl answers, "Yes, we're here," and she takes a handful of preserved blushberries out of her pocket. Those are offered over to Polk, and she nods solemnly in agreement with Vorpal. "Certainly was an adventure times. But not a capitalized Adventure Time! with exclamation points, that is my motleys." No one asked, Etsy. "Okay, is time to make sure not a burnings down whole Hedges. And probablies is closing the trods should doings?"
