Broken Dolls: Cassian's Plan
Participants

Glitch, Isolde, Cassian, Alonso, Allen and Gisa as ST

7 October, 2017

Cassian gathers everyone to talk about his plan, and then, they avert an attack on Wild Roses. Part of Broken Dolls.

Location

Evening in the Hedge. Dark enough not to be a bother for the Darklings, but not full dark yet. Commerce at the Market has been disrupted, travel is more annoying than usual. And a group is together for poking at things with a stick. Who brought them here? And what shall they find, among the autumn Hedge on the way to Market, but before the Long Dark that damages folks on the way there?

Well, that depends.

He had sent out the notes that morning, trusting the wyrd to get them neatly where they needed to go--For the most part. It also didn't hurt that teenagers were hard up for money nine times out of ten and were usually willing to pass notes. I mean, it wasn't like he could buy a cell phone or anything! Cassian waited, after the market disepersed, at a notable tree just down the path along the trod. White bark, like rubber, and thin leaves that splayed outward like palm fronds. An unmistakable tree. There, along one of the branches, the Darkling waited for the others to arrive. It also offered the vantage point of watching the coming and going merchants at the end of the day. Particularly, those carrying the goods already ransacked by the Dolls.

Isolde for once is not in a finely tailored dress. The Bright One has dressed down for the trip into the hedge. Jeans, boots, long sleeved old shirt and a flak jacket. Her hair is down and the flowers bloom even in the darkness. She makes her way down the way, looking around carefully until she finds the shadow that they were there for. There’s a nod given to the Darkling, “Cassian.” she greets him.

How Alonso got a letter in Barcelona is a long story, one he'd probably enjoy figuring out himself someday. How he makes the trip from Catalonia to Vermont in short order is another no doubt enlightening tale. He arrives in good time, astride his black and red striped andalusian horse, cantering merry as you please down the trod proper. He removes his wide brimmed hat and waves it up at Cassian when he spots the other Lost, veering off the path to make his way towards the gathering group. "Good evening, friends and comrades. I came as soon as I could." He replaces his hat on his head, then tips the brim towards Isolde in particular, with respect.

<Pose Order> Gisa has skipped Gisa.

Glitch shows up alone, lurking on into the market as the dusktime light dims fainter and fainter. He walks with his hands shoved in the pockets of his hoodie and the hood tucked up over his head. He sees Alonso first, then follows in their wake to Cassian, lifting his hood to reveal his pixelated visage silently.

Isolde's voice caused Cassian a moment of thought, and his eyes droop to look her over a moment. "I hadn't expected the note to find you, Headmaster. But," he says, pausing a moment, "Well. It is welcome." Cassian rises to a low hunch on the branch, before dropping to the ground below, in front of the others. Cassian offers Alonso a firm nod, and a wave to the Glitch. "Thanks for coming," he says, "I wanted to pitch an idea and see it disseminated to the others involved with these Dolls. I figured the best way is to reach out and see who showed." He offers, looking between them.

When Isolde spies Alonso joining the group there is a smile and a dip of her head to the man, “Good to see you, Alonso.” she tells him. There is a look that is cast over to Glitch and a nod of welcome, “Good evening.” she states. Then a look back to Cassian, “The Wyrd works in mysterious ways, Cassian. A teen got hit by a car and ended up in a cast. I ended up with the missive. So here I am.” she muses. Then she quiets to let the Leechfinger speak.

"It followed me to Barcelona. Whatever you paid in courier fees was worth double the cost, to be certain." Alonso settles back into his saddle with a grin, offering a chin up towards Glitch in welcome, though he doesn't insist that one draw any closer. "By all means, pitch away. We were just about to undertake some actions, my motley and a few others. So your timing is excellent. Early enough to change them before we set them loose, should your idea be superior." Alonso gestures for the man to speak, settling in to listen to someone else's exposition for once.

And here comes Allen, in his Hammerman aspect, still in his hockey jersey from a day or two ago, still wearing the four-point harness with his trusty 8-lb sledge strapped in, still looking like a ambulant gargoyle minus the wings. He mentions no note, but why else would he here, at this place, with these Lost?

He approaches, fingers flexing, his mouth a thin line. He stops when he's near enough, looking at each in turn, caving Cassian for last.

Game: Allen has a "Wyrd" of 4.

It's gathering dark in the Hedge, which means that whatever argument Cassian makes might be interrupted. There's a low, distant sound which vaguely resembles a rhinocerous making strange, horny-kinda noises. Vines rustle, more closely than that sound. A bird-bat-thing squeaks like a rusty hinge overhead.

Nothing's here yet, but the Hedge is never quiet. Especially not as it folds and conforms and leaves marks of these High-Wyrd fuckers running about in it. Cassian in particular inspires the growth of tall, verdant grasses, thicker bark on the trees. As distinctive as a footprint if you know where and how to look.

Glitch stares and tightens his mouth into a mild frown. "You wrote us a note, to all come here, to propose something?" he says, tilting his head. Pitch lifting, clearly thinking some part of this process might have been mistaken. Judging from the crude sword strapped to his back, he's just itching for a fight and hoping he wasn't called out just to compare notes.

Cassian considers Isolde's words a moment. "I hope it wasn't red-hat. He owed me twenty dollars. Or, wait, no. I owe him twenty dollars. And ... his wallet back," Cassian says, before his eyes go wide, "I didn't give his license back." Cassian looks sheepish a moment. "No, no, bigger issues. No time for guilt," he says. Cas nods towards Glitch and says, "Well, mostly, yes." Then, to Alonso, Cassian turns his attention. "I can't promise it will be better," Cassian says, tilting his head a moment, "But I can promise it will offer a different perspective. I've been considering how my ... different skillset could help us in the war. But before we can do that, I realized we have a particular set of information missing: whether this Army was fulfilling the Orders of some determined mind, or whether they were just acting out of some habit or instinct." Cassian explains his thoughts.

“Sharing business about the hedge or Changelings in generally on paper or in other ways outside of secure places really isn’t a good thing.” Isolde states in a soft tone to the group. "I'm sure you'll get to take your aggression out on something soon. Let's just point it towards the right thing." the Doctor points out. She just doesn't want them fighting each other. Then she listens to Cassian and there's a quirk of her eyebrow, "Alright..." she trails off. Watching him.

Alonso confirms Cassian's supposition with a nod of the head, adjusting his hands on the horn of his saddle. "That is so. We have a few theories, but have had few occasions to put them to the test. A single, sound answer would be tremendously helpful in charting the proper course. I agree." He remains both patient and attentive throughout, and unconcerned with having been summoned from half way around the world.

Others with big ideas and bigger plans are talking. Allen's role here should be plain: meat shield, spear point, hammer head. Point him in the right direction and tell him to go. He stands at as close an approximation to parade rest as someone who never been in a military or paramilitary organization can get and awaits his marching orders.

<Pose Order> Gisa has skipped Gisa.

Glitch nods along quietly, looking skeptical but waiting to hear. He hasn't been much on the strategy side. He has his own monsters to hunt right now, and like Allen, he's mostly here as muscle. But he listens.

"Exactly," Cassian says, nodding towards Alonso. "If we are able to determine intelligence, it suggests that their organization could be weakened. Whether it's eliminating Lieutenants or infiltration in the Ranks, we'll be able to better affect their ranks with subtle strikes--Not that preparing a means for destroying them isn't a priority," he says, offering Alonso a nod, "But I'm more helpful in other ways than on a Battlefield. If we can establish they're making decisions, we can sour them. All we need is a game to determine whether or not they are, actually, responding to Orders." Cassian adjusts slightly, slipping the bow over his shoulder to lean on lightly.

<Pose Order> Gisa has skipped Isolde.

"I can confirm they execute tactical command and control. I had the honor of speaking with one of their generals before he succumbed to their wasting sickness. On the battlefield, their officers lead. Whether there is any strategic thought over and above this, or some commander in chief? I cannot say. Their frequent calls for their mother suggests there may have been at one time. But I believe her to be gone now, through whatever means. Still. Describe the game you need to see played out, and I will submit to being a piece on the board for the sake of the collective good." Alonso straightens back up in his saddle, nodding his head in finality at his closing words.

The woods seem to lean in now, almost as if they are listening to what's going on, as the evening darkens into night and the first few stars come out.

In the distance, a clicking--clacking-- metallic sound. It echoes, hard to pin down at first, but Alonso can put it to toward the Market. Everyone else just hears, well.

Tank treads.

The sound of tank trends seems to break the Stonebones from whatever attention he was holding. And just like that, snicker-snack, the hammer is out of his back holster and in his dominant hand, his head snapping towards the sound.

Glitch looks over to Alonso at those last words, staring silently for a bit. Then his head turns as the sound is heard. He scans around looking for the source, tugging his hands from his pockets to reach up and draw the sword at his back, adding the simple note of sharp steel to the air. His gaze returns to Alonso. "Same plan as last time?" he asks.

Ticking his ear a bit, Alonso goes from sitting upright in the saddle to standing up in the stirrups, tall enough to sweep his saber from its sheathe. He rests the blade on his shoulder in preparation, "They're making for the market. What do you need from me?"

"That's what we need to devise. Something that determines a clear, 'this-or-that' choice of rationale. I'd like us to petition our clever-est minds to create the measures we cou--" Cassian trails off a moment. There's a twitch of the tip of Cassian's knife-blade ears as he tilts his head. "They're getting more bold if they're bringing a tank to market. You guys found a weakness on their tanks, yet?" He asks, before he reaches to the small of his back and pulls free an arrow to knock. "There's no telling if the Bruisers are still out, but, I'm sworn to defend the Market. Feeling up for a fight?"

Isolde gives a bit of a look towards Cassian when there’s the sound of the click clack. No, it’s not a slingback. That’s a tank. Huh. Welp. She was not prepared for that. Not at all. “Did anyone bring any dynamite or anything with them?” she asks as she looks in her pockets. Damn.

The sounds become louder, but only subtly so, and then quieter. They're definitely going away from the group, toward the Market...

The ogre's fingers flex on his hammer's handle. He looks from Cassian to Alonso, clearly expecting some sort of... well... order.

Lead, damn you.

When Cassian makes it clear the game is not to take place at this very instant, and with Glitch deferring to him, Alonso resumes his war footing. "Glitch, take prisoners if you are able. If not, so be it. I am able to take out one tank at a time, so if you're unable go ahead and focus your press on their infantry. Watch overhead, they often strike from the trees. Allen, if you are as good at breaking machines as you are fixing them, please do so. Make certain Isolde remains safe, as she can put us back together again. And, yes, Cassian. I am." With that, Alonso gives his horse the spurs and begins charing in the direction of the enemy, saber at his shoulder.

Glitch looks to Cassian quickly. "The hatches on top lead straight into the cockpit. They might be sealed." He turns to Alonso. "I'll run CC, keep the other tank locked down," he beeps. Calm. Focused. Eager. He looks off towards the market as night continues to fall. "Let's go."

"I'll get us to the border of the market. If you're going loud, we'll come from the other direction and hopefully catch them in the middle," Cassian says, before slipping the bow over his shoulder and reaching out with his hand. "Tag up if you want a ride," he says.

Isolde gives a bit of a nod to that, "Yeah, lets go." she tells them. No, she's not armed. Apparently she's going to fight unarmed. Or just heal. She taps Cassian on the shoulder gently and then gives him a smile, "Tag. You're it." she tells him quietly as she waits.

When the horse and the carriage... of people by Cassian arrive closer to market, there's a howl in the trees above. A low, keening noise that is unmistakable to those who've heard it before. The branches rustle, and there's a scraping sound of claws on bark. The briarwolves -- there are at least two -- are not yet in range, but they will soon be. And they're not staying in the trees this time. Interesting.

The scene ahead of the group as they come in closer to the Market? A literal invasion. Two tanks, and what looks like an entire squad in between them. Armed not just with swords, this time, but with firearms.

Alonso's horse falls into an easy gallop as the Spaniard performs the Polish Charge of massed infantry supported by tanks. The first shot from their point man passes dangerously close to Alonso, but does no harm. It's hard to tell who might be more surprised by this. Still, the Spaniard makes the most of this turn of events. His horse ploughs right into the hob, blasting it from its feet and sending it sprawling into the dirt several feet distant. With that out of the way, Alonso leans down and sweeps his saber from his shoulder, slashing a cut across the chest of the ranking officer visible on the field. The cut shouldn't have been lethal, but just the same the creature briefly clutches at its injury and topples to the ground as though slain. Rather than be caught up and surrounded, Alonso keeps right on charging through the formation, gaining a bit of distance no doubt before he'll veer back around.

The first tank starts ticking its tower toward the group which came in with Cassian, and one of the soldiers who Alonso's horse missed? Raises his firearm -- an ugly, kludgy thing that looks like it's made of five different kinds of guns stuck together -- and fires. It hits Glitch right in the side, and hard. That lack of armor's a killer.

Glitch sees the ugly mishmash raise and aim at him, and hears the loud blast as it goes off. Whatever it is hits him right in the chest, exiting his side on the other side with a plume of blood in the air. His eyes widen, but his grip on the steed tightens, and he grits his teeth to stay on. The sword whips back behind his head, and he thrusts his free hand towards the first tank as it rears its head towards the group. As Glitch glares with seething determination through the pain, there's a loud BANG from inside the tank, followed by horrific wrenching noises, causing the entire thing to fall motionless. For the time being.

After appearing from the tree, Cassian is surprised to see the army that stretches out around them. His eyes widen a bit, before he offers a gentle hiss of breath and takes off towards the army. "Headmaster! Wounded!" He calls, before Cassian slides into the dirt a bit away from the army and pulls a handful of dirt up. He brings it up and blows the dirt out of his hand, consecrating the clause and calling upon the power of the land around them. If the woods around them were darkened by Cassian's Wyrd before, they became all the more forboding as the land itself rises against the army. Roots and branches from nearby trees turn against the army, sparing Cassian's allies.

"You can't hide from me," rumbles Allen at whoever is the tank that's turning its turret towards him and his little group. He trots to a run at that tank, winding up with his 8-lb. sledge at the same time. "COME OUT, COME OUT, AND FIGHT ME FACE TO FACE!" He shouts and, as he reaches the tank, swings his hammer into its side.

The dent the hammer leaves might seem much too large for the weapon that leaves it. The tank obliges by rocking a bit. Noises of surprise and alarm can be heard from inside.

More shots fired, more shots miss, though one wings Cassian and doesn't seem to hurt him. Armor's great like that. Then the cybernetic briarwolves? Are out of the trees. Alonso quickly turns the horse about and rides around the side of the formation, flanking the second tank and putting its steel armor between the pair of riders and the infantry. "Keep your head down, I am sending Rojo back to Isolde. You've done your part." With that, Alonso releases the reins, draws his dagger from behind his back, and ... evaporates. It's as though a gust of wind comes along and wisks the Spaniard away in a shower of dust. The briarwolf's gouge gets Allen's attention like whoah. "That all you got, you piece of Hedge trash?" he growls, turning to face it. "I'll POUND your RIBS in!"

The Stonebones brings the hammer down on the 'wolf, as promised, with a satisfying crunch, tearing away some metal. Sparks, blood, and pus pour out of the thing.

Allen seems pleased with himself.

Isolde sees Glitch start to roll off the horse and she winces, “You’re going to hurt yourself more.” she grumbles at him as she takes a knee by him. Her boots taking the brunt of the dirt. She reaches up to brush some up that weirdly laid hair back from his forehead and she bleeds some more glamour from her body, “You’re going to feel better in no time, Glitch.” she tells him with a smile. And sure enough, whatever the hell Isolde does /this/ time closes him right the hell up and makes him feel just as good as a spring chicken!

The briarwolf takes off toward market, perhaps trying to pull Allen away from the group. It succeeds, and he runs off trying to keep the wolf from making it into Market.

Alonso condenses in the belly of the second tank. It's always a little jarring, that process. But at least he gets the drop on the crew! Before either one of them can really react to what's happening, he's stabbed his sabre through the back of the gunner and drawn it out of its seat and down onto the deck of the vehicle. The turret, of course, stops turning and goes entirely idle. That just leaves the pilot who, like Alonso, is now stuck in exceedingly tight quarters with the enemy.

Glitch rises, fully renenewd by Isolde's potent glamour. He doesn't even look back at her; the surge of energy through him propels him back into the fray, planting his foot and springing off of it to launch forward. His wild lunge takes him straight into one of the armed soldiers, and takes his sword straight through them in a wide swath. His blade erupts from the front of the soldier into the air as he lands, panting a bloody banner through the air. He stays there as the gore rains around him, sword held straight out to the side, and his head turns suddenly towards the next target.

Another shot in the chest, and Cassian offers a grunt. He was starting to feel the hits a little more with each of the shots smashing against his vest. Another angry hiss escapes his lips, and the bow is brought to bear. He's a little late, and the cyberwolf is too close for a clean draw. Cassian shuffles and backs away, rushing before he turns and looses the arrow at the cyberwolf. There's a moment where the arrow seems to tear through the cyberwolf's body. Though metal and flesh are seemingly seperated, or, at least liquids ... something else seems to trigger inside the wolf. It explodes. Not the same falling apart of Cassian's arrows, but, a precise explosion of a specific nature, once the wolf 'dies'.

Just as quickly as Isolde had healed Glitch, he’d went and gotten himself hurt again. The Rubenesque women puts her hands on her hips and stamps her foot on the ground, “I just fixed him.” she sighs dramatically. Then she takes one hand off her hip and wiggles her fingers at Glitch as he continues to fight. Apparently she was going to keep on the Gameplayer for the moment.

Alonso simply leans to the side to evade the last attempt of the driver to retain its vehicle. His riposte is a quick jab into the creature's shoulder which, quite contrary to the superficiality of the wound, drops the creature outright. Alonso once more has gained control of one of their tanks. Rather than attempt to commandeer the turret, Alonso stands up and opens the hatch to poke his head out and survey how the rest of the battle fares. Amid all the gunfire and carnage, he removes his hat to wave it cheerfully across the field at Isolde and the others. "Hello, comrades!"

Glitch settles his gaze on the next nearby soldier. Seeing it distracted and wounded, he closes in for the kill, striding towards the target with sword in hand. Another shot from the battlefield strikes him right in the chest, exploding out his back. He keeps moving forward, unphased, unflinching, the hole in him sealing up completely moments later. As the soldier turns towards him with gun raised, he thrusts his blade forward into its face, a quick and brutal finish.

The soldiers seem to have figured out where the healing is coming from -- at least one of them has. There's no more screaming from them, just a weird grimness that a Dusk would recognize. It's the we're all fucked, we might as well try to take as many of them with us as we can look. All the soldiers have it; it's an oddly human look on their inhuman faces.

Try not to have that face show up in your dreams later.

A shot at Isolde hits her solidly, and Glitch is winged once again.

Isolde catches the hat waving from Alonso and she gives him the queen wave in return, “Keep doing what you’re doing.” she calls out to him. Then someone shoots her. THE NERVE! She looks down to her armor and then to the one that shot her. The adrenaline is not her friend as she charges across the ground and lays a smack across the soldier's face, “Did you mother teach you it’s not nice to strike a lady?!” she shouts at him.

After having taken stock of the battlefield, Alonso returns his hat to his head-- having made it clear he's in this particular tank --and closes the hatch again as he drops back into the turret. He steps over the dozing bodies of the crew, straps himself into the gunner's seat, and man's the pedals to start the turret wheeling about. It bypasses his comrades and the remaining enemy infantry and instead comes to focus on the other tank, as yet disabled on the battlefield. Alonso plants the targeting reticle squarely on the broadside of the other vehicle, and prepares to fire. This should be fun.

The leather of Cassian's whip coiled around the torso of the Doll, whom struggles against it with a twisting of it's body. It isn't enough, however, as Cassian rolls the whip around his own arm to draw the doll close. Then, in a flash, Cassian reaches out and grabs the Doll by the throat. What seem like roots begin to seep from Cassian's petal-white fingertips, as he begins to draw the very life from the doll. Moment by moment, Cassian slowly drains it. This was all he focused on.

With his turret zeroed in on the enemy tank, Alonso squeezes the weapon's trigger. There's a pair of noisy clunks, followed by a gout of bright fire. The plume pours across the battlefield, engulfs the opposing tank fully, and robs the crew inside of air and, in the fullness of time, probably flesh. There's really no telling quite what goes on inside the tank in those last fateful moments. The roar of the weapon mercifully drowns out whatever screams might ensue. It doesn't take too awful long for the constant shower of fire to ignite the propellant stored inside the other vehicle. The concussion of the subsequent explosion is enough to knock anyone standing near it right off their feet. It lifts the turret right off the chassis, and sends it spinning end over end until it crashes into the ground with a crunch and a groan of stressed steel. A pillar of flame shoots up towards the sky for a few seconds before it curls back down again, replacing itself with a sickly gout of rich, oily black smoke. Alonso releases the trigger, then, returning the battlefield to comparative quiet.

Apparently Isolde had some pent up frustrations to take out on soldier boy and during the tussle they have she ends up exploding him. The Bright One is expecting that given she’s seen them explode before. But nothing prepares her for the stench or the feel of it. The Fairest DOES NOT FEEL PRETTY! And for good reason. She takes a breath once she’s sure the things is done and then she brushes her hair back over her shoulders and turns to look at the others. “Well, that was fun. We should get everyone fully healed and headed back to stoneheart. Paperwork to do. Gardens to tend. All that stuff.” she states in a cheery tone. How very Stepford wives of her.

Glitch stops and swipes the gore off his sword to the side before sheathing it again, staring for a while at the last one exploded by Isolde. He pans his gaze over to the tank engulfed with flames and the battlefield now littered with bodies. "Stage clear."

Once again, the Hedge is a veritable mess. Cassian's Wyrd has made the woods change shape, there's pus and blood and broken parts everywhere... but the group has shared information, and more importantly, gained another potential source of information. Two, specifically. The Major and one of the footsoldiers. And now? It's time for showers.
