Jack brings an injured Gray Jay to Locklear Animal Sanctuary

Location

Locklear Animal Sanctuary

The off-Road SUV that drives up towards the main house is marked with the Vermont Park Ranger logo, big and versatile. It's not the first time park rangers drop by here probably, but the man that climbs out of the vehicle is new. Jack tells the large german shephard sitting on the passenger seat; "Just wait here, I don't want to let you out before I know it's okay." Then he proceeds to look around, to see if anyone's about outside.

Maggie is already out in the open parts of the animal sanctuary. Baloo, the resident black bear is off in his enclosure and giving the Doctor a bit of a harumph as she turns away from him to head over when the SUV is pulling up. The woman gives a smile as she sees Jack looking around. "Hey there, I'm Doctor Locklear. What can I do for you?" she asks him as she gives a look inside the truck and sees the German Shephard, "He's fine to get out if you like." she adds.

Watching the woman approach, Jack squints intently at her; it's habitual, studying details and memorising as best as he can. "Hi," he says and offers a hand to shake, but no smile - though his gaze is friendly. "And great, he hates being in the car when there's action. Don't worry, he'll stay near me." Opening the door, the dog hops out immediately and wags tail, going to greet Maggie too.

Jack eyes that bear, rubbing his jaw. "I got a grey jay in the back - hurt its wing. Might be able to save it though. You got room and time for a bird around here?"

Maggie gives a smile when he says hi and there's a nod to him, "Hello." she offers in response. She's not really a stoic person. "And no reason for him to stay pinned up in the car out here. The animals are all secured and I don't have a dog of my own that runs loose so he's alright." she offers to that. When the dog comes over there's a smile and she crouches to greet him and give him a scritch behind the ear, "Well aren't you handsome." she tells him.

Then Maggie's looking back to Jack, "A Whisky Jack? Sure sure. I can take one in. We've got plenty of space for birds out here since we don't get a lot of them most times." she admits as she straightens. "Did it get hit by a car or do you know what happened?" she asks him.

"His name is Goblin. I'm Jack Fry." He finally remembers to introduce himself, watching Goblin and Maggie - the dog is a very happy animal and dances around Maggie with tongue lolling out, happy for the scritches. "His ego is big enough, don't stroke it," Jack jokes, flashing a quick grin.

He opens the back of the car and takes out a cardboard box, in which the wounded bird is; he takes a breath and looks down into the box, speaking softly. "Don't worry - you will be safe here and you will feel better." His gaze is intent, his voice focused. The bird, though not held down, is sitting there very calmly and looks up at Maggie with little dark eyes.

"Not sure what happened, I found him on the side of the road - so yeah, probably hit by a car."

Maggie gives a look to Goblin and there's a bit of mirth in her dark eyes, "He named you Goblin? You don't look like any of the goblins I've seen." she teases him. And boy. Had she seen some UGLY goblins. Then there's a look to Jack and she smiles, "Nice to meet you, Jack. Are you part of the local Fry family?" she asks him as she starts for the back of the truck.

She gives a look to the bird and there's a smile, "I forgot how little they were. You've got a good eye." she tells the man. "And Mister Fry is telling the truth. We'll get you all fixed up and when your wing is better we'll see if we can get you back out into the wilderness." she tells the bird softly. Then there's a look to Jack, "You know when you turn birds into rescue and there's a possibility that they can't be released you leave a name for them, yes?" she gives him a smile. Which meant...he gets to name the bird!

"He's a very nice Goblin," Jack agrees, and adds; "I liked fairytales." Maybe he still does. He carefully gives her the box and looks curiously at her when she speaks to the bird like he did. "Local Fry, yeah. Came back to the area a few months back, been in New York for ages. Nice to be back home."

He doesn't even hesitate, when she asks the name: "Fairy. Her name is Fairy." He seems to have grown some sort of bond with the bird, carefully stroking its head with a finger before he reluctantly lets Maggie take care. "Can I see where you keep the birds?" he asks curiously.

Maggie gives Jack and look and there's a smile, "Nothing wrong with liking fairytales. Just some of them were very dark." she admits. And Arcadia was dark and full over terrors. "I like them and mythology. A lot of the animals that can't be released back to the wild around here have storybook names and such. Like Baloo." she grins. Then she gives him a nod when he confirms he's a local, "I went to a school with a cousin of yours I believe. They moved away a bit ago though. Welcome home belatedly." she tells him.

The name he chooses for the little bird makes her smile and there's a look to the bird, who seems to like it, "Fairy it is. It's fitting." she nods. Then she gives a softer smile to Jack, "Sure, if you want to follow me I'll take you back to their enclosure. We've got a few enclosures for the larger birds and one for smaller birds like her. She'll be inside for a bit though." she admits as she starts to lead them back past the barn.

Goblin keeps by Jack's side, as the two trail along Maggie - both look around curiously though, taking in the place. "Baloo, eh?" Jack cracks a grin at the name, glancing over at the bear again. "Guess he's staying here always then? Can't be released?" he guesses. "Just hoping she can fly again." He frowns, glancing down into the box - the bird seems to sense his mood and shifts around in there, and makes some noises. "Shhh, it's alright, you'll fly again. Don't worry," Jack comforts with a soothing voice.

"So you're a doctor - in what?" Jack goes back to being curious about the woman, raising an eyebrow as he glances her way from the side.

"Baloo, yeah. He's my big guy. He was smuggled as a pet and just couldn't survive in the wild. So he's kept here. We have all the proper licensing and things as well." she tells him. "He's a gentle giant. He loves dogs." she points out. Then there's a look over to Jack when he talks on the bird and her flying, "I'll make sure we get her the best treatment we can." she tells him. "She will." she nods to that.

Then there's a look to him, "I'm a Zoologist. Decided since I've been good with animals most of my life that it was a natural progression really." she offers. "So if you get more injured animals, or need help identifying something, don't hesitate coming up here or calling." she admits.

Then they finally come to the enclosures for the birds. Two are for the biggers birds. One housing a sleeping great horned owl and the other housing a raven. The other is for small birds. All three are well made and top of the line. And all seem to be clean and well taken care of.

Jack wasn't particularly worried, having heard only good things about this place, but clearly he cares about animals and wants to check it out for himself. He does peek at the other birds, but leaves them alone. Goblin keeps close and makes sure to avoid the birds too, so he won't startle them unncessarily, taking cues from his owner. "Zoologist? Impressive. And I got a feeling I'll come by quite often - maybe I'll even meet Baloo next time. I need to get your phone number before I go, I'll bee like a mother hen, checking up on Fairy."

He stops by the small bird enclosures, offering to hold the box so Maggie can open up and get her stuff sorted. "Always been really good with animals too - but I took another route. I was a K9 in New York. Always wanted to be a police officer, so I combined the two."

The raven gets a bit excited when he sees people. Especially Maggie and he hops down to come to the front of the enclosure and sneaks his beak through the cage to grab the end of her braid where the silver designed hair tie is, "He always likes trying to grab the shiny things." she muses apologetically as she gets her hair away from the raven. Then there's a smile, "Yeah, figured studying all the animals was a good way to calm my curiosity. I specialize in bears and some exotics." she admits. "And come by whenever you like." she nods to that.

Then she reaches forward and opens the door on the enclosure for the smaller birds and there's a moment taken to make a small and soft nest for Fairy, "Do you still do K9 officer for the Park Rangers here?" she asks him as she makes short work of things. Then she steps out. "Do you want to put her in?" she asks with a smile.

Jack does look amused at the Raven's antics, but is content not to 'speak' to the bird. Besides, his focus is on the much smaller grey jay. "Ran into a bear the other day, a young one. He came up on the trail, but I scared him off. Think he was a bit confused, maybe hungry." He doesn't elaborate, and it's not that unlikely to see bears around here.

Nodding thankfully, Jack carefully wraps his hands around the bird, watching that wing so he won't hurt it further. "Sweet little one, just be still - I won't hurt you." He gently puts the bird into the little nest, strokes it again; it makes some noise in return, in pain but calm. "Thanks. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this." His glance is pure thankfulness and quite humble; he cares more about the animals than people.

"Probably not going to be uncommon with a young one. Especially in the Spring. Hopefully mama was around somewhere and got him back on the right paths and fed." Maggie states with a smile. Then she steps back and watches the man with the bird and there's a thoughtful smile on her face as he settles Fairy into her temporary home. "I'll have the vet come out asap and give her a look over and see what we can do for her wing. She's in good hands, if you don't mind me giving you updates and pictures I can send them as I get them." she offers with a soft smile.

"I think he was a bit too old for a momma to be around," Jack admits, but doesn't elaborate on how he made a near-adult bear go away. "Any bills, send them to me of course," he nods, taking his phone out so they can share numbers. "And spam me with updates - if you don't, I'll spam you with questions," he mock-threatens, flashing a grin again. Once he got her phonenumer and saved it, he takes one last look on the grey jay, then tips his hat at Maggie. "Afraid I have to go, I was on my way to the office - already late for a meeting. But couldn't leave the bird there on the road, could I?"

Goblin sniffs at the enclosure that Fairy is in, as if saying his own farewell, for now.
