Facts About Vermont

While we have rather shamelessly altered the face of the planet to create our handy dandy pair of mountains and the River Tam, we have retained most truths about Vermont itself.

For those of you not familiar with this neck of the woods, here are some rough ideas of what life would be like for your characters.

Seasons

Vermont is a typical New England state -- its weather is moody, blows hot and cold, and doesn't tend to give you too much warning when it swings one way or the other. The state gets a lot of snow, and the growing season isn't very long (between 100-130 frost-free days). Assume that snow can, and will, occur any time from October to May.

Average Temperatures

Spring: 61°F
Summer: 55-79°F
Autumn: 50-70°F
Winter: 3-28°F

Mind you, Winter lasts through March. There's a reason people joke about "flannel" being Vermont's fashion sense. Layers, layers, layers.

Weather

Changeable, but since our game is on a lake/river, sorry, we're going to get a lot of clouds, and a lot of precip. Heard of lake-effect snow? Yeah. It happens. Clear days are an exception, not the rule. Overcast is far more common.

Location & Travel Times

Where are we located, compared to real world geography?

Loosely, we are on the Northeast Kingdom's southwestern border, in upper-mid Vermont. We are relatively close to Stowe and Montpelier as the crow flies, since we just barely touch on I-89 after it makes its big bend west, but flying is the only way you're going to get across Vermont easily. All those mountains? They go north-south. Mountains make nice walls. It may take you half an hour to get to one city and four hours to get to its neighbor.

Animal Life

Vermont's population is very rural, and cities are small. There is plenty of forest for beasties to live in, and especially in our imaginary valley, plenty of space humans haven't yet claimed for themselves.

The following wild animals can, and will, be seen:

  • Black Bear
  • Bobcat
  • Canadian Lynx
  • Coyote
  • Deer
  • Fisher Cat
  • Fox
  • Loon
  • Martens
  • Moose
  • Ruffed Grouse
  • Snowshoe Hare
  • Virginia opossum
  • Wild Turkey

Don't get small dogs and don't let your cats outside, people. Not unless you want them to end up somebody's supper.
