Equipment/Mundane Crafting
Mundane Crafting
Mundane crafting, in this case, is anything which creates a physical object, requires an extended roll, and will make something which could give you/anyone an Equipment bonus.
Baking a cake wouldn't count. nWoD doesn't have a Deliciousness Bonus. :(

Per the GMC page, we are NOT using the extended action rules from the original nWoD corebook.
Extended action rules below derived from GMC p.187.
Each roll in the extended action reflects a step in the process, wherein something changes, and you either progress further toward your eventual goal (successful roll) or suffer some form of setback (failed roll).
Crafting Policies for Item Submission
Rule of thumb: K.I.S.S.
Materials Cost
In terms of equipment and materials necessary to craft an item, the person CREATING the item may purchase the materials at a Resources cost 1 dot lower than the actual cost of the item.
That is to say, if you are creating a sword which is normally an Availability 2 item, you can get the materials for it for Availability 1.
What you choose to sell it for is up to you, and the sucker you get to buy it. Let staff know, and we'll give you the equivalent of a temporary Resources boost to reflect getting more money.
Submission
Send in a +req/equip for each item you are crafting.
Explain what it is, and if you're using any particularly rare items, explain how/where you got them. This request is the equivalent of spending your resources on the materials.
Roll for crafting until you succeed.
Staff will give opinions if something seems fishy, but this is mundane crafting, and loosey goosey easy is the name of the game. Use reality as a guide for how long it should take. The Internet will have myriad opinions you can Web search for.
Once you are done, staff will put the new equipment in your +inventory (or that of the person buying it from you!), and you can all RP the actual time it took to craft the thing, without having to keep the +myjob open. :)
What is my Dice Pool?
Sample Dice PoolsNot sure what you should be rolling? Here are a few examples of what staff would expect for certain types of rolls:
|
Your dice pool is Attribute + Skill [+ Specialty + Equipment + Situational modifier(s)], as usual.
You will roll this a certain number of times for your extended action.
- e.g. a blacksmith forging something might roll Strength + Crafts.Blacksmithing + 2 + 3 to take into account the bonus from his tools and his workshop.
How many times may I roll?
The maximum number of times you may roll your pool is capped at:
- Attribute + Skill + Specialty(ies)
Let's say our example blacksmith has Strength 4, Crafts 3.
He adds his Blacksmithing specialty, bringing the total number of rolls he can make to 8.
How many successes do I need?
Most actions require between five and twenty successes for completion.
Successes Required | |
---|---|
5 | Reasonable action. Most competent characters can complete it, given the right tools/knowledge (replacing the brakes on a car, etc.) |
10 | Difficult, but a professional in the field (i.e. someone with 3+ dots) could do it, with effort. |
20 | Very difficult, even for skilled characters (e.g. preparing a world-class performance or incredibly intricate masterpiece of an invention). |
How long should it take?
That would depend on context, and realism.
Check the internet. Is this something that ordinarily takes someone weeks to do? Could you realistically complete the task in a day?
This is non-magical equipment, so staff is willing to be a bit more loosey goosey about timing. You can fudge and say you have been working on something for a while.
- If something is going to take weeks, a roll = 1 week is reasonable.
- If you could do it in a day, a roll = 1 hour is reasonable.
Can I stop while crafting?
Yep! You can ICly take breaks.
What happens if I fail a roll? You aren't using Conditions.
No, no we are not.
