Kat is terrified by meeting people who insist on talking to her.

Location

Crossroads Cafe

John is sitting--alone--at the big table. Why? There's no one else here, and perhaps he is hoping others might arrive and fill the spacious table's other seats. He's sipping on a milkshake and eating a chili dog, with a plate of fries before him, crispy and hot.

It requires the usual check-up first; Kat might be seen peering in through the glass doorway, peeking one way and the other as if scoping the place out for trouble, albeit without much effort at secrecy herself. It seems the coast is clear, as she makes her way inside a moment later. There's another back and forth look, one that passes briefly on the vicinity of that large table but doesn't linger too long there, making it unclear if she spots any 'trouble' or not. Either way, it's onward to the counter, where at least the waitress seems to recognize her. "What'll it be, hon? Usual?" A nod answers this, and the 'usual' turns out to be coffee with a great deal of milk in it, possibly making it more on the milk side than the coffee. It's paid for after a few moments of pocket-change digging, and then clasped in both hands for a grateful sip.

The quiet man at the table looks up, naturally, as another customer comes in. Expression neutral but welcoming, he says, "Hello, there. Would you like some company, to talk to? I'm new to town and trying to get to know people. My name is John."

Kat gives a small jump, or at least, a little jerk that she just keeps from being a jump, when someone actually talks to her. Still, she looks that way, staring silently a moment, not seemingly convinced one way or another. But, after a moment of waiting, she summons either the courage or curiousity to take a few steps over. She does not, however, sit at the table. Instead, she picks a booth to one side of it, and perches at the edge of it's cushioned bench. Close enough, but not quite! "I'm Kat." In several ways, it might appear!

John smiles--and it looks like this is something he does rarely--at the skittish feline woman's antics, and says, "It is a pleasure to meet you, Kat. Worry not; I am pretty harmless. Do you live here in Tamarack Falls?

A bob of the woman's head answers the question, albeit in initial silence, aided by the fact that she seems intent on sipping from her nice big mug of barely-coffee-and-milk. She seems content to leave that answer as her lone reply for some time, only perhaps remembering her manners a few moments later. "For a pretty long time. What about you? There's a lot of new people here, recently."

John finishes his chili dog, and wipes his hands on a napkin tidily before sipping his milkshake. he replies, "I arrived yesterday. I've heard that there's been something of an influx; I suppose I'm part of that. It seems nice enough here to settle down, though."

Max comes inside from the town square. Max has arrived. Max looks at you.

This revelation, perhaps, causes Kat a bit of further weariness, and her ears can even be seen to tack backward slightly, reflecting her concern. "Have you... met with the Waykeepers?" Of course, this question comes not just with her usual sense of cautioun, but a careful glance around their immediate environs to make sure there is no one within immediate earshot. "New folks, you know, they handle all of that. Making sure everything is by-the-books." Which is a polite way of saying that you're not a monstrous agent of the fae there to drag them all back kicking and screaming.

"Yes, I met with Ava earlier today. She's going to help me with everything, set things up, make sure everything is kosher." He drains the milkshake, and pays the bill with an economical series of motions. "Nothing to worry about."

Kat is perched at a booth across from the table where John is (was?!) sitting, oddly carrying out some sort of conversation across the open aisle between the two. She has a large cup of coffee with a lot of milk, or maybe a large cup of warm milk with a little coffee. Whatever bit of discussion the pair share, she doesn't seem entirely friendly, maybe a little bit wary even (which could explain the distance), but seems to accept his reply as enough and thus pulls back a little more into her booth to sit like a normal mostly-person and drink her sorta-coffee.

Wandering into the cafe, Max takes a curious glance around. Though she enjoys meeting new people, she's glad that the place currently isn't crowded. Less people for her to accidentally bump into. Assuming John has wandered off for one reason or another, the mortal misses the familiar face and finds herself a booth near a window that gives her a decent view of the rest of the restaurant as well. Looking around again while she looks over the menu, the cat girl is spotted and she watches her curiously for a few moments - not long enough to be considered creepy or rude. A friendly smile is offered her way. "Hey, what's good for lunch here?" she calls out curiously.

Kat's eyes widen just a little bit behind her glasses as someone else -talks- to her, but such is life when you brave a place like this. There's people everywhere! After getting over the usual shock and wariness, she glances side to side, perhaps just in case someone else is really the one at focus here and she won't have to answer, but when it is indeed left to her, it proves time to rise to the occasion. "Ummm..." Strong start! "Ah, it all usually smells good. They've got a good cook. Well, she's not here now. But I guess they have lots of good cooks." Or at least, two. "But, um..." If she's forced to pick, there's another pause, and she finally declares: "Tuna fish sandwich?"

"Tuna huh?" Max's nose wrinkles a bit at the suggestion. "Never liked the smell... But a sandwich of sorts does sound pretty good. Wonder if they have anything warm..." She comments, mostly to herself. Continuing to browse the menu, when a waitress comes around, she orders a soda and eventually decides on a burger with fries. Once the waitress is gone, Max turns her gaze back toward the cat girl. "Do you know if there's a deli in the area?" There's a pause before she adds, "I mean, assuming you're one of the locals and not new around here like I am," she says with a gentle chuckle.

Kat probably looks shocked at first. Who doesn't like tuna? Well, even if the new arrival doesn't want one, now that Kat has been forced to bring it up, the idea of a bite to eat is suddenly a great deal more appealing. And so with that now in mind (or imagined in her stomach), she pops out of the booth and starts making an approach to the counter, mug still in her hands. So once the burger is on order, she makes a meek attempt to catch the waitress' attention (and fortunately she seems to know Kat well enough to catch on), ordering the afforementioned delight. Then she first nods, and shakes her head, affirmative and negative in turn about how long she's been around. "Deli? Um... not in the square. Probably a few on Main."

"Main, huh? I'll check it out next time I'm hungry for some sort of sandwich," Max tells Kat with an appreciative expression. After her drink order arrives, she thanks the waitress and enjoys a few refreshing sips. Then her blue-eyed gaze drifts curiously back over toward the Lost. "Thanks for the suggestion, even if I didn't take it," she tells her with a friendly smile. "I'm Max, by the way," she offers, raising her hand up for a brief wave.

"Not here?" Kat wonders, tilting her head. What did she think the deli was for? "I usually eat here. But I guess there's a few different sorts of things on Main. Or most things. It's not like the city." Which is presumably a great deal more sprawling, as cities tend to be in comparison to their small town counterparts. A small nod acknowledges the word of thanks, and a shrug the second part. "More for me." That's -probably- not how it actually works, but hey. Seems to keep her happy thinking of it that way. "Kat," she'll echo, introduction-wise. "So you... just moved here? I wonder why so many people are. I don't really like it."

Max chuckles lightly at her statement, a playful smirking touching her lips. "Most small town folk don't like it when new people invade their space. Change is a bad thing in their opinion," she states, picking up the menu again to idly eye the various items, possible options for another time. "This place is apparently not any different. Got grilled by another local here last night." She chuckles and takes a glance around. "Maybe it's just this diner that's not so friendly?" she wonders, letting her bright-eyed gaze drift back over to Kat.

While briefly thoughtful over the dynamics of small-town life, Kat's look turns rather aghast at the suggestion that the diner itself is somehow to blame, and she shakes her head. "Oh, no! No no. They're very friendly here. Hazel is nice. It's a good place! Just... a lot of locals come, maybe?" So its' just a friendly place filled with unfriendly locals? "Sorry. Um, anyway. Welcome." And with that, she will collect her plate and cup and make a retreat off to some corner booth, rather hunching down within once she gets there, and thus finish her meal in silence before possibly causing any more trouble.
