“In that case,” said Napoleon, “let us wait twenty minutes; when the enemy is making a false movement we must take good care not to interrupt him.”
Overview
She came to Fort Brunsett around the turn of the century, a British bride to an Utridge scholar. Their match was an odd one, Paul the mild and retiring schoolteacher and Joss the driven, ambitious businesswoman who seemed to wear the pants in the family. But they made it work and she remained to become a citizen, a dutiful wife, a devoted family woman, and eventually the owner of several bed and breakfasts in the area.
There was that odd patch several years ago which drew a byline in the local news, the wife arrested for battery of her husband. But it was glossed over, the charges dropped, the truth of the matter lost in the family closet. When her husband died in early 2015, no one could argue that Joss' grief seemed genuine. She retreated into her mourning and when she finally emerged, it was to take the reins of her business again.
Since then she has established herself as a woman bent on quietly contributing to her community. Where once Mrs. Utridge might have thrown a party so that all might come and see the charity cheque the young couple were giving, now her bed and breakfasts are sometimes booked for the use of battered women and their children. Money that was once given now comes with the woman herself appearing at rec centres to lend a hand in their renovations. Photo ops are avoided in favour of boots to the ground activism.
But softly...softly.
RP Hooks
- Winter Court - She is strong in the chilly force. Ice and sorrow can temper a weapon as surely as fire and rage do.
- The Noemata - Exemplar of Reason as the Queen of Swords, sage to the Fools, symbol of Honest and Forthright Truth. She will suffer a fool but she will not feed them bullshit.
- Philanthropy - It isn't easy to track what she's done, and for whom, but where there is need, Joss is often not far behind.
- Training - Hiding only gets a person so far. The game is hide and seek, after all. Better to be prepared for the second half of that phrase. Gym, gun range, track, out in the middle of nowhere...
- Bed and Breakfasts - Most people can see the advantage of having five or six houses ready to occupy and scattered across a wide area.
- Utridge - Married in, her husband now dead and no children born of the union... this leaves her on the outskirts of family gatherings but she still wears their name.
