“"He stole from the rich, and gave to the poor." It became a bedtime story. But listen: forget history. Forget what you’ve seen before. Forget what you think you know. This... is no bedtime story. ”
– Friar Tuck, Robin Hood (2018)
Overview
Mortal Life
Marian Atlee Fry was an only child: her father was a park ranger, while her mother was a librarian. She's part of the Fry family, and so seen in the background occasionally. She was quite the tomboy growing up, learning all manner of survival skills from her father. But her greatest joy was in something else her father taught her: archery. By the time she was in high school, she was already a local legend. Rather than go to college, though, Marian went to train under a professional archery coach, and her talent only grew. By the fall of 2015, Marian became more than a household name -- she was considered a virtual shoe-in for the US archery team to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
But that didn't happen -- instead, tragedy struck. Only an hour from home after one of the final qualifiers for the Olympic team tryouts, Marian and her parents were in a terrible accident; the car struck an errant patch of black ice and went off the road and down the bank to slam into a succession of trees. Marian's parents died in the wreck, and it was deemed a miracle that Marian survived. But by the team she recovered from her injuries, the Olympics had come and gone. Rumor has it that she hasn't touched a bow since; instead, she took the occasional English and creative writing courses at community college.
But that is only part of the story. The truth was far stranger.
Behind The Curtain...
The truth was that Marian Fry, after the accident, wasn't really Marian Fry. She was a Fetch of Marian, put in her place when The Diva came to steal the real Marian away for a new plaything on his Grand Stage. And there, she languished for an unknown amount of time, unable to remember her past while being forced to be a helpless "Maid Marian" in a twisted retelling of Robin Hood that cast The Diva as the "heroic" Sheriff of Nottingham, and invariably ended with Marian screaming in horror as the Sheriff found new ways to "kill" Robin Hood. The story would change to fit The Diva's whims, but it was a twisted retelling that would have done the Brothers Grimm, John Carpenter and Stephen King proud.
But sometimes, the abducted can escape. Such was the case with Marian, who picked up Robin's bow while helping clean up after yet another performance. The feel of the bow in her hand, though, sparked memories, and she began to reclaim who she was. And with that reclamation came a desire to do something audacious: upstage The Diva.
That final performance, The Diva became more and more vexed as "Robin Hood" outwitted him time and again. Finally, provoked beyond reason, The Diva came charging at "Robin", only to stop and gawk stupidly at the pair of arrows that pierced his flesh. Before going into a rage, he heard a distinctly feminine voice as "Robin" unmasked himself... to reveal Marian. "I'm no Maid." And in a puff of theatrical smoke, she was gone, already on the run.
She ultimately escaped, finding herself back at the site of the accident, only to find that almost four years had passed; it was now late August of 2019. She hiked her way home, where she found her Fetch living her life, or at least what could have been Marian's life. Something ultimately did happen, and now there is no Fetch -- only Marian. But whether Marian killed her own fetch, or something else happened is anyone's guess.
One thing is for sure: Marian Fry is reclaiming her life, one way or another.
RP Hooks
- Archery Fame - Marian's more than local celebrity; she was actually preparing to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro as part of the US Olympic archery team. There was hope that she might beat out South Korea's dominance in women's archery, but a tragic accident in early December 2015 claimed the lives of her parents and sidelined her for months, keeping her from being part of the Olympics. Rumor has it that she hasn't touched a bow since.
- Aspiring Writer - Marian, from all indications after her accident, took the occasional community college classes in English and creative writing. Some whispers in the local rumor mill indicate that she's an aspiring novelist, though she has yet to publish anything.
- Changeling - It won't be a secret to the freehold for long that there's a new Changeling in town. She's primarily a Fairest seeming Telluric kith, but there's hints of an Oracle kith also shining through.
- Fry - Yes, she's one of the Fry family, through her dearly departed father. She's been a bit of a hermit, though, rarely seen since returning home following the accident that took her parents.
- Survivalist - Marian's father, an experienced park ranger, taught Marian everything he knew about survival skills. It's not a stretch to say that she's quite talented in that skillset, and could quite possibly live totally off the land.
