I started my first attempt at creating a hybrid healing fruit today. From what I've read, blushberries only fruit in Spring, and Ertwen only fruit in Winter. What if we could make a hybrid that fruited in both seasons?

So far I'm trying the pollen thing I found on the internet. The mother plant is the one on the left of the x, and the father plant is the one I got the pollen from. It's on the right of the x.

I've tried combining Blushberry x Ertwen, and Ertwen x Blushberry. They have both been given blood as fertilizer, and left to grow. Fingers crossed!

The plants look like they're growing okay, but they're both really weird. Any time I walk past the bush, it tries to curl around my leg. It's kind of cute, in a creepy way. No buds yet.

I found a few small buds on both of them!!!

They fruited!!!

My drawing skills are enough to make a cat laugh, so I won't even try.

• Blushberry x Ertwen: a green-speckled pink berry about the same size as a regular blushberry, but kind of lumpy and peanut shaped, with a mealy, unappealing texture in the mouth. Healed a self-inflicted cut on my hand just as well as regular berries/ertwen do.
• Ertwen x Blushberry: a green pod with pink blush on the tips, and on the peas inside. Flavor of ertwen peas is much improved, sweet and juicy, but still kind of mealy. Also healed just as well as regular berries/ertwen.

The fruit all died. All of it. Maybe they only fruit on the equinox?

Have to wait until next year to try again...

Experiment #1

• 1 Cheeroot
• 1 mundane Ginger

Premise: cheeroot works really well, but it feels/tastes like eating worms. Who wants to eat worms just to feel better?

I was going to try the pollen method, but how do you pollinate something underwater?

I figured it out! I did some searching online, and I guess it IS possible to pollinate underwater stuff by hand. Now I guess I just have to wait until this tub of cheeroot makes flowers, so I can try putting the ginger pollen on it...

Finally. Finally, this blasted cheeroot is blooming!!!

Now to cross my fingers that the hybridizing works.

It worked!!!

It made a viable plant, but I'm killing it when I'm done, because it's not something I want to keep around. The root system, while still slimy, was plumper and quasi-segmented on the outside, with a crisp snap to it when broken, more like ginger root, but it is not a healing plant.

Not only did it burn my mouth and throat so badly that I ended up coughing up blood, like, a LOT of it, with a lot of pain, but it made me like that I was burning. For an hour. An hour!!!

Experiment #2

• 1 Chu Chu Culm

The flavor of lime from chu chu culm is super strong, so I decided to try using pollen from the culm to fertilize the cheeroot. I fertilized it with blood, like the other. I read on the internet that it's supposed to take a really long time, like, until the plant makes a fruit with a new seed, before you can make new plants out of them, so I don't know why these are actually working.

So far, so good. The plant is growing, but it kind of reminds me of grass you stomped on a lot until it was half dead.
