Overview

      Simone is known by the Tamarack Falls gossips for two things: for being that girl whose mom took off when she was 10 and for scamming the tourists out of cash by telling their fortunes by day and playing fire dancer at night. Really? A freckled fortuneteller? Dancing with fire? She may as well be a stripper! Give it five years, she probably will be. Probably on drugs too, or in jail like her no-good brother. Maybe she is on drugs, she can barely keep her eyes open sometimes...

      The more matronly among these rumor queens will generously allow that it all traces back to Mrs. Evert vanishing: if she hadn't, Mr. Evert wouldn't have taken up with the bottle and that floozy from the Fort; Evert Junior wouldn't be doing a stint in Northern State Correctional; Simone wouldn't have dropped out of school at 16; she might have developed a little drive, a little ambition, instead of cycling between the couches of friends and spending all of her taxless income on coffee and ice cream.

      Poor little lamb.
