The Broadcast

As the hour rolls over, the normal Friday broadcaster of Fort Brunsett Radio signs off. Moments later, a Very British voice cuts in. "Happy Friday, Fort Brunsett! This is Amanda Green, signing on to do a special Friday broadcast. Seems I've managed to convince someone that I can do more than just write... and now, I'll be bringing to you a smattering of new music from around the musical spectrum. First, let's start off with something with a bit of energy to it... Following right on the heels of a new album, this is a new single from my good Gorillaz, titled Sleeping Powder. Yes, just we need to keep going on a Friday..."

"...and wasn't that brilliant? For those devote Gorillaz fans, I'll let you know that was made by 2-D. Though couldn't we all have guessed?" There's a soft laugh. "Right then, moving on to artists that exist in this reality, we have a new by Fitz and the Tantrums. Quite a lovely message, as we gear up for a hot weekend. Released just yesterday, here's 'Fool'."

"I absolutely love Fitz and the Tantrums. Listening to it... well. Everything's chirpy," HRM Amadna Green quips. Listeners can surely hear the smile in her voice. "But, things aren't always chipry. Some of us identify a bit... differently. And so for those all that don't see the bright side... let Depeche Mode into your soul."

"Speaking of Going Backwards... Guess who is an itsy bit afraid she'll not be allowed back into the States next she leaves? ... That's right, this bird. Am I bitter? Noooo... yes." The broadcaster clears her throat. "Right then, let's move on to happier thoughts. Happy like... New Killers. That's right... The Killers will be putting out their fifth studio album in September. Who's excited? Gina, I know you are! This is the first single off it, The Man."

"Just brilliant. I'm excited. Once again, this is Her Royal Majesty Amanda Green, broadcasting from the WFBR studio. If anyone wants to call in and chat about new music or my being banned from Britain for usurping the crown, please feel free! The number is... 555-1234... So, while we're talking about new music and while we're talking about September, how about the news that the Foo Fighters will be putting out a new one in September? ... Shocking, yeah? Dave Grohl - swoon - has announced that any gossip about the brand 'taking a break' or 'breaking up' was just a cover for their working on this album. I have for you the first single off that album... Here's The Foo Fighter's Run. Oh, and make sure to turn it up to eleven for this one..."

"... New Killers. New Foo Fighters. What could possibly come next? Say... maybe... New Queens of the Stone Age? Say, a new album out in late August? ... If it couldn't get any better, I'll add in that it's produced by Mark Ronson. Here's The Way You Used To Do."

"It's going to be a very good summer for music... quite good. Now, I've gotten a request from a dear friend of mine, but I'll admit, it's a touch odd. So, before we get to that, let's slow it down just a bit... This song is made by four lovely Frenchmen, who go by 'Phoenix'. This is Goodbye Soleil, off their new album, Ti Amo."

"Well, I have just had the most lovely called. He goes by 'Number Six', and he requested Carlos Santana's Black Magic Woman. Now, Number Six tells me that I sound uptight, and that I cannot possibly expand my mind, unless I play something new. Like... apparently... a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song. Now, Number Six did have a new song he wanted to hear, and we'll get to it... but first... This is an ode to the dark and beautiful. Let's hope they can survive this sun and heat... I give you Igorrr's Problème d'émotion. Oh, and while this plays out? Enid, love? Any chance you can find out who that awful man, Number Six, is?..."

"What did we think of that about that, Fort Brunsett? Anyone else take particular pleasure in Problème d'émotion? If so, I might be able to play matchmaker... Feel free to call in, or text me! Now, let's see if we can't heat things back up... This is Death From Above 1979's Freeze Me."

"Not a very well known band, Death From Above, but I enjoy them. Now, before we move onto our next song... Miss Bedlam has called in, and she's a message for all you lovely people..."

<CALLER>: The broadcast cuts over to a very Russian accented woman speaking. "Hello! I call from work, taking a break. Number Six, he sounds like piece of work. Perhaps make him help you relax, yes? I can give lessons on how to beat a man until he cries like child. Very, what is the word... Therapeutic. Best part is most men will volunteer. Well, first time."

And back to Green, who is laughing. "Oh, blimey! Well... that is quite the offer. And what might be your name, dear? Would you like to maybe send out a message to the airwaves, despite endorsements of violence?"

<CALLER>:Once more, the Russian-accented voice is back. "Oh. Just wish for pig headed man to suffer, is all. Ask for me at Crossroads Cafe if you want lessons. I enjoy your music. Dos Vedanya. (click)"

"Well then! I wish I had something appropriately angry to play... but... well. From Bleacher's new album Gone Now, here's I Miss Those Days."

"Did you all know that Jack Antonoff, the man behind Bleachers, is also the man behind Fun? A man with two Golden Globe Awards, three Grammy Awards, who created Bleachers while touring with Fun? Who writes for Taylor Swift, and Sia, and St. Lucia, and Lorde? Impressive... Now then! Miss Bedlam, if you're still out there, Mister Six just called in!"

<CALLER> The voice that comes next is obviously a man's voice, put through some kind of voice distorter. "You can tell your Miss Bedlam that I'll be there with bells on. I'll volunteer, alright. Those who fight the good fight will not be intimidated! You don't even have the gumption to play my damn request!"

"Well then. Miss Bedlam, looks like you have a date. If you two end in love and married, name your first child after me, yeah? ... And now, since I had been waiting for a more organic song to put this after, but rather hate the idea of anyone thinking I lack gumption, here's Mister Six's request... I give you Jump by Major Lazer."

"Now, that is not what I was expecting from an old square like Mister Six! Maybe he meant to be ironic...? Well, whatever the case, I do love some Major Lazer. The group currently consists of Diplo, who most of you all will know, and Jillionaire, my favorite Trinidadian DJ. Now, then, while we're shifting genres... Let's see if I can't get a few of you Vermonters to show the off. It is, after all, just about time for me to finish up. This is XO Tour Life, by Lil Uzi Vert. A lovely ballad if I ever heard one..."

"A song about breakup, heart ache, mental illness... Exactly what we need on our Friday! And now that we're hitting that thirteen hundred hour, it means my time with you all is done! Thank you, WFBR, for lending me your radio waves. Thank you, Fort Brunsett, and even you, Tamarack Falls, for lending me your ears. If anyone has any suggestions for next week, or wants to come fight me, well... I don't want to self-promote, but you all know where I work! And while I am above self-promoting, I am not above playing a song that is very much my choice... dedicated to someone out there, possibly listening... To play us out, here's Haim's Little of Your Love. Amanda Green, signing off. Happy Friday, Fort Brunsett..."
