The Librarian

The Master is a Gentry local to the upstate New York area created by Kip's Player.

Description

The Librarian is never really seen as much as it is a sense of Something There that looms over everything and everyone in The Library. Instructions are simply understood rather than spoken. It doesn't let off a feel of being male or female. The Librarian is a collector of stories. Does it write them and have others act them out or does it force them to act them out so they become written down? Nobody is sure.

Realm

Thelibrary.jpg

Imagine an ever-shifting place where all tales of fiction and fantasy are acted out in front of your eyes by magical creatures. That is the world outside The Library, the place where almost all of the Lost there experience. One day someone is a king, the next a butcher, then later a blind peasant begging in the streets. Everything and everyone changes at the whim of The Librarian and whatever story is being acted out.

In the center of the realm is The Library. It is a sanctuary of the written word, mostly in books but also in scrolls, stone tablets, paintings on the wall and every other medium you can imagine. The place is deathly silent and often dark, forcing the few workers inside to adapt to seeing in the dark with some sort of eye enhancement. The workers never encounter each other. It is a very lonely existence, but often suits those who were taken for that purpose as they tend to be loners, shy and more interested in the life they can lead through books rather than experience themselves.

The Library is never-ending and each section has a different look and feel. Sometimes it is an unending row of books, sometimes a book-lined circular pit, sometimes a forest where books grow from the trees, sometimes a dark cave where writing appears on the walls. Some places are card catalogs in rows, some are ceiling-to-floor computer systems.

Methodology

There are few actually taken by The Librarian. Most who end up there were discarded by other Gentry or traded and are used to bolster the stories that the trapped are forced to live out in the fantasy realm outside the central library where the landscape is constantly shifting. The few who are actually taken end up working in the library in some degree and often take on roles in the stories, especially used to keep them on track by any means necessary. While those means are sometimes sadistic and deadly, many times it is as simple as lying in order to send someone back on the correct path.

For most, taking part in the stories is a far better existence than the one they had with their former Keeper. Sure, there are risks and quite a few don't make it out of the stories unscathed, but most of the time as long as you are sticking to your role and being entertaining, you're mostly left alone.

Those who work in The Library look forward to taking part in the stories. Otherwise, it is a lonely existence where they have no contact with anyone, even fellow workers. Their time is spent shelving and stocking and maintaining and sweeping and sorting and cleaning and being bored. It is also torture for some, to be so surrounded by books but have to read them in secret. Most of those who end up being taken to work in the library are quiet bookish types, often nerdy with little to no social skills. The rest are a hodgepodge of types and personalities.

Suggested Themes for Escapees

  • Bibliographers - Those who work in the library are quiet types and end up Elementals, usually Levinquick which allows them to see in the poor lighting and zip along place to place.
  • Players - Those who end up in the stories can be anything, taken from anywhere for any reason. They are the castoffs and unwanted by the other Gentry and anything goes.
