“It's a kind of spiritual snobbery that makes people think they can be happy without money.”
– Albert Camus
Overview
Raphael comes from Vermont, the only (known) child of one of those weird New England families horror novels are inspired by. They trace their lineage back to French nobility, but they've been Americans for generations now. Rafe grew up sheltered from the world, taught that he was better than other people. He had a gift for magic that ran in the family, and from a young age he was taught the proper rituals and had it impressed upon him to keep them a secret from his lessers, i.e. everyone else.
Then his sister and caretaker married someone too young for her, who took her for everything she had before divorcing her. The family was broke, and Rafe was finally starting to see some tarnish on the shiny surface of his life. A legacy of lies and betrayal, dark truths of his lineage unveiled. You know, the usual family drama. He left in disgust, and his family has disowned him. When a de Lorraine leaves the fold, he's not welcome to return, not that Rafe wants to.
Penniless, desperate, and wanting to further himself with a proper education, Rafe has turned to the only person he knows who's willing to help him: his former brother-in-law. They didn't end on great terms, but the man was willing to take Rafe in. For a price. Nothing serious, just his unquestioning loyalty and obedience.
