Overview

Ashoka is, at root, a very simple puzzle to solve. Born in India in 1941, orphaned by war, and adopted by missionary parents in post-WWII England, he was raised to value hard work and loyalty. His three siblings, fellow war orphans from other locales, were likewise inclined, but as the oldest son, he took his duties seriously. He went to work young, to help bring in more income for the family, to support his parents.

One day, his siblings drove down to the shore for a day trip. Emma was 15, Beatrice was 13, and his brother Thomas 10. They collected shells, they strolled the beach, they explored the sea caves in the cliff, and it was in one of those caves that Ashoka's life was changed. A Fae had come, and Thom was young and ripe for the plucking. To spare his little brother's life, Ashoka made a deal: he would serve the Fae, willingly and without resistance, for as many years as Thom had lived, ten years and ten days, if the Fae would swear to leave his family be, and to release him when those years had passed.

      The Silver Winnower was amenable.

Ashoka, within its realm, was shaped by endless war. He was a knight, fighting the beast-formed soldiers of The Sable Wind, and a smith, to care for his own armour.

While for Ashoka, only a decade and decad of days (Arcadia) had passed, between the point at which he went with the Fae and the point at which it released him into the Hedge, over 77 mundane years had passed. He came out in April 2008. He went in when computers were the size of rooms, and came out to the first iPhone 3G. His Keeper personally ensured that 'Sho would remember their deal, even if he forgot all else on his trip through the Hedge. His Keeper ensured, too, Ashoka's truthfulness: he is compelled, and cannot knowingly deceive through his own actions.

Since his release, he has maintained ties with his family in England through his brother, and took courses to earn educational degrees as needed. He trains horses and does reenactment fighting as an excuse to keep himself fit and in shape for combat. He is a Knight of the Dragonslayer, and a knight, and does what he can to balance the paired needs of his dual lives.

RP Hooks

  • Knight of the Dragonslayer - Who doesn't want to be friends with the local violent zealots?
  • Sun Court - He's as Sun as Sun can get. Mantle 5. The stick up his rump is a mile wide.
  • Reenactor - He often does reenactment fighting or training. Want to learn how to fight on horseback?

Contacts

  • Zillah - Best wretch. <3 A heathen Moon whom he would dearly love to murder, but she has been too clever about timing pledges with the Freehold. Everyone needs frenemies.
  • Name - It could be someone they find useful, someone they care about.
  • Name - It could be someone they loathe, an adversary or rival.

Soundtrack

David Bowie - As the World Falls Down

There's such a fool heart beating so fast,
in search of new dreams.
A love that will last within your heart.
I'll place the moon within your heart.

Queen - Don't Stop Me Now

I'm a shooting star leaping through the sky
like a tiger defying the laws of gravity.
I'm a racing car passing by like Lady Godiva.
I'm gonna go go go!

Michael Jackson - Rock With You

Out on the floor,
there ain't nobody there but us.
Girl, when you dance,
there's a magic that must be love.
